E-sports player granted deferment but not for Overwatch tournament: MINDEF
SINGAPORE: E-sports athlete Figo Chua will play in an international tournament after being granted deferment from National Service (NS), but the deferment was not specifically for the tournament, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) clarified on Wednesday (Aug 7). "The basis for Mr Figo 'Azalea' Chua’s deferment from full-time NS was not for participation in the Overwatch World Cup, as reported," the ministry said in a statement to CNA. Media articles have said that Chua, 18, was given a deferment to take part in the Overwatch World Cup 2019, which is taking place in November. He was due to enlist on Aug 14, according to a post on the Overwatch Singapore Facebook page. Overwatch is a team-based first-person shooter game created by Blizzard Entertainment. Chua was granted deferment to enrol for a NITEC course in January 2020, MINDEF said. "Under current policy, deferment from full-time NS is generally granted to enlistees to pursue educational qualifications up to ‘A’ … [Read more...] about E-sports player granted deferment but not for Overwatch tournament: MINDEF
Tennis: Kerber, Barty ease through, Federer and Nadal set to play
LONDON: World number one Ashleigh Barty and defending champion Angelique Kerber eased into the second round of Wimbledon on Tuesday (Jul 2). Unlike second seed Naomi Osaka on Monday, who exited in straight sets, both Barty and Kerber disposed of their opponents with relative ease. Barty beat China's Zheng Saisai 6-4, 6-2 while Kerber, the fourth seed, beat fellow German Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-3. Barty did not have it all her own way in the first set being pegged back to 4-4 after leading 3-0. Barty finally took the set in breaking Zheng on her serve at 5-4. The Australian made the break on Zheng's first service game in the second set and was rarely troubled after that. "The first rond is always very tough and it took a little time to get used to the court," said Barty. "It definitely took some time to adjust." Barty, who is bidding to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2015 to win both the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season, said the weight of … [Read more...] about Tennis: Kerber, Barty ease through, Federer and Nadal set to play
Affordability and 5G race are reasons why Malaysia continues to support Huawei, says telco regulator
KUALA LUMPUR: Affordability is among the reasons behind Malaysia’s continued support for Huawei as it looks to tap into the great potential of the 5G technology, said Malaysia's telecommunications industry regulator, despite security concerns raised by the United States over the Chinese telecommunications giant’s systems. “Malaysia telcos are very much into Huawei and ZTE because they are affordable,” said Ms Nur Sulyna Abdullah, the chief transformation officer of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), on Wednesday (Jun 26). “Everyone is racing into 5G technology. In Malaysia, everyone wants to know about its potential – how are we going to use it to ease traffic, to enhance security, in agriculture and health,” she said in a panel at the 33rd Asia-Pacific Roundtable, a regional conference hosted by Malaysia’s Institute of Strategic and International Studies. On security risks, Ms Nur Sulyna said these are not just exclusive to Huawei technology but “any … [Read more...] about Affordability and 5G race are reasons why Malaysia continues to support Huawei, says telco regulator
‘Explosions like thunder’: SCDF first responders on Jalan Buroh fire
SINGAPORE: With fire crackling all around him and the hissing sound of pressure escaping from highly flammable gas cylinders, Major Navin Balakrishnan squared his shoulders and walked through the bottling and storage facility of Summit Gas Systems. He and his team had a crucial task – to cut the supply of gas from two large LPG “bullet” tanks, each about 60 tonnes in size, at the back of the facility. To do so, they would need to shut off 12 valves. Once done, that would cut the supply of gas from the bullet tanks to the other parts of the facility. It was a risky task – and so he decided to scope out the situation alone first before getting the rest of the team. READ: Jalan Buroh fire: Air of caution lingers at shuttered Summit Gas Systems site “When I entered (the area with the bullet tanks), the distinct sound of hissing was everywhere,” Major Balakrishnan, who is the commander of Bukit Batok Fire Station, told reporters. It was a “calculated risk” going in … [Read more...] about ‘Explosions like thunder’: SCDF first responders on Jalan Buroh fire
