In an unprecedented time of bad news for box offices and movie theaters, there’s a sliver of good news to be shared. Variety reports that over the weekend Christopher Nolan’s time-bending film Tenet has passed the $200 million mark at the global box office, despite the pandemic, having grossed $207 million to date. While $200 million at the box office is certainly something to celebrate, Tenet is still struggling stateside, raking in only $6.7 million domestically. Last weekend, Warner Bros. said Tenet grossed $20 million in its debut weekend in the U.S., however per Variety Warner Bros. reportedly fudged the numbers and included weekday preview screenings and the long holiday weekend in that report. Tenet grossed just $9 million dollars from Friday to Sunday during its opening weekend. Yikes. … [Read more...] about Rakes In $200 Million at the Global Box Office, Struggles Domestically
PREVIOUS, FRIDAY: Mulan, Disney’s live-action update on its 1998 animated classic grossed an estimated RMB 52.5M ($8.26M) on its opening Friday in China. The figure includes midnights, and portends a three-day weekend around $26M. This is a disappointment for the Niki Caro-directed movie which has faced mounting controversy in recent days, and will have suffered from piracy as it was released elsewhere on Disney+ last week. … [Read more...] about ‘Mulan’ Now Eyeing China Bow In $20M-$25M Range After Soft Saturday – International Box Office
The film stars homegrown talent such as Jet Li, Gong Li, Donnie Yen and Liu Yifei, and is based on a Chinese folk story. But, it has been hit with low social scores (7.6 on Maoyan and 4.9 on Douban — the latter slightly up today). And, of course, given the movie released on Disney+ a week ago elsewhere, piracy is an issue. In the wake of several U.S. Senators and Congress reps calling out Disney’s cooperation with elements of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region’s security and propaganda authorities in the production of the film, there is also a reported blackout on local press covering the release. However, it is not clear how much the recent stirs outside China have affected the box office performance within the market. … [Read more...] about ‘Mulan’ Moola Muted In China With $23.2M Opening – International Box Office
Interstellar, for its part, rode from Sunday through Thursday at No. 1, and has cumed $8.24M in the re-release. As we wrote yesterday, Nolan’s Inception is having its 10th anniversary resissue in China on August 28, followed by his Tenet, the first major new tentpole of 2020 since the pandemic began. Tenet goes on September 4 in the Middle Kingdom after beginning offshore rollout on August 26. Coronavirus-imposed capacity and screening limits are still likely to be in place in China, though perhaps somewhat less stringently. Tenet was shot with IMAX cameras and almost all IMAX screens there are expected to be open by the time the movie hits theaters. This is good news. … [Read more...] about ‘1917’ Leads China Weekend; Korea Has Yet Another Hit With ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ & ‘Greenland’ Makes Hay In France – International Box Office
