DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania: President John Magufuli urged Tanzania's women to "set your ovaries free" and bear more children as a way to help boost the economy into a regional powerhouse, a step critics said would instead worsen inequality and poverty. "When you have a big population you build the economy. That's why China's economy is so huge," he said late on Tuesday (Jul 9), citing India and Nigeria as other examples of countries that gained from a demographic dividend. "I know that those who like to block ovaries will complain about my remarks. Set your ovaries free, let them block theirs," he told a gathering in his home town of Chato. Since taking office in 2015, Magufuli has launched an industrialisation campaign that has helped buoy economic growth, which has averaged 6 to 7 per cent annually in recent years. Football: USA retain Women’s World Cup as Rapinoe, Lavelle sink Netherlands
LYON: The United States retained the women's World Cup on Sunday (Jul 7) as a Megan Rapinoe penalty and a Rose Lavelle strike gave the holders a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in the final in Lyon, prompting new questions over a potential visit to Donald Trump's White House. Rapinoe stroked home from 12 yards to put the USA ahead just after the hour mark and end the tournament as joint top scorer on six goals after making headlines for stating she would boycott any team visit to the presidential mansion after the tournament. Coach Jill Ellis remained coy on whether the team would carry out the visit if invited, saying that she "wouldn't bet" on an invite coming. However the US President put their spat to one side to congratulate the team, tweeting: "Congratulations to the US Women's Soccer Team on winning the World Cup! Great and exciting play. America is proud of you all!" The whippet-like Lavelle, another stand-out performer over the last month, got the second goal … [Read more...] about Football: USA retain Women’s World Cup as Rapinoe, Lavelle sink Netherlands
Football: Bonansea inspires Italy’s return to women’s World Cup
VALENCIENNES, France: Barbara Bonansea ensured Italy made a dramatic return to the women's World Cup after a 20-year absence on Sunday (Jun 9) with a stoppage-time winner that gave her team a last-gasp victory over tournament dark horses Australia. Juventus' Bonansea popped up at the back post to head home the winner having already levelled for the dogged Italians, putting the Azzurre second in Group C, level on three points with Brazil after a Cristiane hat-trick inspired them to a 3-0 thumping of Jamaica in Grenoble. "What can I say, it's incredible, and scoring with my head as well, which never happens with me," said Bonansea, who scored Italy's first two World Cup goals in two decades. "It's so wonderful. I hope we can qualify for the knockout stage because these two goals are meant to help us do just that." The Australians, tipped by many to have a big impact in France, had taken a first-half lead through hotshot Sam Kerr, but were sloppy at the back and allowed … [Read more...] about Football: Bonansea inspires Italy’s return to women’s World Cup
