Hacking group targets Vietnam activists: Amnesty

· January 24, 2021 ·

Global human rights watchdog Amnesty International said on Wednesday that Ocean Lotus, a group with ties to the Vietnamese government, has been involved in hacking attacks targeting activists and an NGO. The accusations highlight how authorities could resort to unlawful digital surveillance to keep tabs on activists and government critics . Who was targeted? The suspected attacks took place between 2018 and November 2020. They targeted two prominent Vietnamese human rights defenders, one of whom lives in Germany, and a Vietnamese NGO based in the Philippines, Amnesty said. Blogger and pro-democracy activist Bui Thanh Hieu was targeted with spyware at least four times between February 2018 and December 2019, it revealed. He left Vietnam and has lived in Germany since 2013. It said another blogger based in Vietnam, who was not named due to fears for their safety, was targeted three times last year. A Philippines-based nongovernmental organization, the Vietnamese … [Read more...] about Hacking group targets Vietnam activists: Amnesty

Switching to Android: iOS 14 may look great, but Android launchers still put it to shame

· February 25, 2021 ·

Battle of the widgets Activating launchers, theme packs, and widgets felt as transformative as the world turning to color in Pleasantville . Michael L Hicks 25 Feb 2021 5 Source: Android Central As part of my Switching to Android journey, I'm documenting the differences between the two operating systems, exploring the Android features that you might take for granted, but that iOS users may find a compelling reason to switch sides. My first couple of days with Android 11 and One UI 3.1 underwhelmed me. I successfully transferred my compatible iOS apps over, and there they sat as plain little circles or rounded squares, crowded in on one another. In particular, my Pixel 3a icons looked insubstantial, the display so cramped that several app names ended in ellipses (i.e., Google P...). Bad aesthetics didn't exactly make me enthusiastic about the transition. Before iOS 14, iPhone users happily lived with the same aesthetics and similar UI for … [Read more...] about Switching to Android: iOS 14 may look great, but Android launchers still put it to shame

OPINION: Prepping our buildings today for an EV-ready future

· February 25, 2021 ·

New Delhi: Soaring fuel prices , environmental awareness and the new vehicle scrappage policy announced in Budget 2021 are likely to encourage a gradual shift to electric vehicles in the coming years. Personal vehicles make up more than 90 percent of registered motor-vehicles in India, with nearly 162.6 million two-wheelers sold between 2011-2020. Hence, for the nation to realize its EV vision, facilitating its uptake among individual consumers – both four- and two-wheeler users – is as important as electrifying commercial fleets. However, a critical obstacle to boosting individual uptake today, is the lack of charging infrastructure at convenient locations. With studies showing that about 50-80 percent of private charging happens at homes and another 15-25 percent at the workplace, it is essential to equip our buildings with the necessary infrastructure for EV charging . Aiming for the low-hanging fruits Charging points in buildings will need to primarily cater to … [Read more...] about OPINION: Prepping our buildings today for an EV-ready future

Rumor: Samsung will launch an Exynos-powered laptop with Radeon graphics this year

· February 25, 2021 ·

Rumor mill: Samsung and Apple have long been rivals in the smartphone world, but could they also soon have competing laptop SoCs? According to a new report, the Korean firm’s 2019 partnership with AMD to create an RDNA-powered GPU for mobile devices could lead to an Exynos-based laptop with integrated Radeon graphics. According to ZDNet Korea , a Windows 10 Samsung laptop featuring an Exynos SoC with an integrated AMD GPU will arrive later this year, sometime after the release of the next, and possibly last, Galaxy Note handset. There have been rumors that Samsung won’t launch another Note , but it seems the company hasn’t given up on the series yet. Samsung earlier this year said that its “next flagship product” would use an Exynos SoC featuring AMD’s RDNA graphics tech. It was assumed this would appear in one of the company’s premium smartphones, such as the Galaxy Fold, but it could land in laptops first. These will differ from AMD’s integrated GPUs in its APUs; Samsung’s … [Read more...] about Rumor: Samsung will launch an Exynos-powered laptop with Radeon graphics this year
