PARIS (REUTERS) - France said it was in talks with the German government to try and avoid planned cross-border travel restrictions announced by Berlin on Sunday (Feb 28) after concern about the spread of Covid-19 in the French region of Moselle. Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases on Sunday classified the Moselle district as an area of concern due to the spread of a coronavirus variant first detected in South Africa. The decision prompted Berlin to announce that Germany would impose restrictions on travel from the Moselle region from Tuesday. Public transport between Moselle and the German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland will be suspended, and commuters arriving from Moselle by car will need to produce a negative Covid-19 test. Police will not set up stationary border controls, but will make random checks, German authorities said. France's Europe Minister Clement Beaune said on France Inter radio that he regretted the German decision. … [Read more...] about France calls talks after Germany announces Covid-19 cross-border restrictions

Football: Germany coach Loew opens door to return for exiled trio
BERLIN: Germany coach Joachim Loew opened the door Sunday (Feb 28) to a surprise summer return for Thomas Mueller, Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels, the trio of veteran World Cup winners he controversially exiled two years ago. "If you begin a transition, you should not reverse it and go back in the opposite direction," Loew told public broadcaster ARD Sunday. "But the pandemic has stolen almost a year from us, so we can think about maybe pausing the transition if it is absolutely necessary," he added, suggesting that the trio could return for this summer's European Championships. A return for Mueller, Hummels or Boateng could be possible "if I am of the opinion that we need an extra percent or someone who brings a bit of energy," said Loew. It is the first time that Loew has shown signs of relenting from his controversial decision to drop the three experienced stars back in 2019. Though under pressure to give younger players a chance at the time, criticism of Loew has … [Read more...] about Football: Germany coach Loew opens door to return for exiled trio
Germany limits travel from French region over COVID-19 variant
BERLIN: Germany announced on Sunday (Feb 28) that travellers from France’s northeastern Moselle region will face additional restrictions because of the high rate of variant coronavirus cases there. Germany's disease control agency, the Robert Koch Institute, said it would add Moselle to the list of “variant of concern” areas that already includes countries such as the Czech Republic, Portugal and the United Kingdom. Travelers from those areas must produce a recent negative coronavirus test before entering Germany. The Moselle region in northeastern France includes the city of Metz and borders the German states of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate. Clement Beaune, the French minister for European affairs, said France regrets the decision and is in negotiations with Germany to try to lighten the measures for 16,000 inhabitants of Moselle who work across the border. Specifically, he said France does not want them to face the daily PCR virus tests that Germany has applied … [Read more...] about Germany limits travel from French region over COVID-19 variant
Germany still winless in Nations League after Swiss draw
BASEL, Switzerland: Germany were still waiting for their first-ever Nations League win after they gave a tired performance and were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland on Sunday. Ilkay Gundogan gave Joachim Loew's side the perfect start with a clinical goal in the 14th minute but Silvan Widmer earned their smaller neighbours a deserved draw just before the hour. In the end, Germany may have been grateful for the result in the League A Group 4 game as the much livelier hosts, unbeaten in their last 17 competitive matches at home, created the better chances. Germany, who also let the lead slip in a 1-1 draw with Spain on Thursday, failed to win any of their four games in the inaugural Nations League two years ago and have drawn their opening two games this time around. Switzerland have one point after losing their opener to Ukraine. Germany coach Joachim Loew was left frustrated by his team's failure to capitalise on their early lead. "We didn't take our chances for a … [Read more...] about Germany still winless in Nations League after Swiss draw
