Auto decline started before pandemic: ZF

· March 4, 2021 ·

ZF has said the slump in the automobile sector in the country started pre-pandemic, although green shoots have been visible since mid-2020, with regulations and pent-up demand starting to take effect. “The drop in auto sales actually started from the second half of 2019, and then the pandemic happened. But if we look at sales from July 2020, we can see a V-shaped recovery. A lot of factors contributed to that, including pent-up demand, and the need for OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) filling in the pipeline owing to the shift to Bharat Stage-VI norms for emission standards. Suresh said its decision to indigenise a large part of its sourcing base helped the firm control costs over a number of years, especially during the pandemic. … [Read more...] about Auto decline started before pandemic: ZF

About 46,000 General Motors auto workers strike in US

· September 16, 2019 ·

DETROIT: The United Auto Workers union began a nationwide strike against General Motors on Monday (Sep 16), with about 46,000 members walking off the job after contract talks hit an impasse. The move to strike, which the Wall Street Journal described as the first major stoppage at GM in more than a decade, came after the manufacturer's four-year contract with workers expired without an agreement on a replacement. Local union leaders met in Detroit "and opted to strike at midnight on Sunday," the UAW said on its Twitter account. "This is our last resort," Terry Dittes, the union's lead negotiator with GM, told a news conference after the meeting. "We are standing up for the fundamental rights of working people in this country." UAW officials said the two sides remained far apart in the contract negotiations, with disagreements on wages, health care benefits, the status of temporary workers and job security. "Our members have spoken; we have taken action; and this is a … [Read more...] about About 46,000 General Motors auto workers strike in US

Trump not considering US tariffs on Japanese autos ‘at this moment’

· August 27, 2019 ·

REUTERS: US President Donald Trump on Monday (Aug 26) said the United States would not imminently impose new tariffs on autos imported from Japan as the largest and third-largest economies continue their trade negotiations. At a press conference during a global summit in Biarritz, France, Trump was asked if he was still considering the levies, which he can institute under US trade law if his administration finds that the imports threaten national security. "Not at this moment, no, not at this moment," Trump said. "It's something I could do at a later date if I wanted to but we're not looking at that." Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced a broad agreement on Sunday, with Tokyo making concessions on agriculture and Washington maintaining its current auto tariffs of 2.5 per cent on passenger vehicles and 25 per cent on pickup trucks. Details of the framework agreement have not been released. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said at the G7 summit … [Read more...] about Trump not considering US tariffs on Japanese autos ‘at this moment’
