Test cricket rewards specialist skills, but batting in T20 is probably destined to evolve towards universalisation. The vast majority of cricketers currently play at least two of its three formats, but the experience of West Indies' players - for whom the politics and economics of the sport opened up a wider schism between T20 and the other formats - has given us a glimpse into the future. The likes of Gayle, Evin Lewis, Nicholas Pooran, Pollard, Russell and Dwayne Bravo either only play T20 or only white-ball cricket, and train year-round to be elite T20 hitters. West Indies' line-up at the World T20 in 2016 had room for one anchor - Marlon Samuels - but there's unlikely to be any room when they line up to defend their title next year. … [Read more...] about Do you really want Virat Kohli in your T20 XI?

3. David Miller - 100 in 38 balls Remember those ‘Killer Miller' headlines back in 2013. The origin of those were in that 38-ball hundred the South African made against RCB for Kings XI Punjab at the IS Bindra Stadium. Royal Challengers made a challenging 190 for three and looked on course to register a win when they reduced Kings XI to 64 for 4 in 10 overs. In the first, I split a career into thirds and looked at how players started, consolidated and finished, focusing on how careers progressed but not so much how they ended. In the second, I also analysed how players finished. But because I took a fixed length of ten Tests as the last stage, it was not very conclusive: ten Tests represent 37% of Sydney Barnes' career, 27% of Clarrie Grimmett's, and 5% of Sachin Tendulkar's. In earlier eras, a player might have taken four years to play ten Tests, but now that could happen in six months - albeit in a Covid-free world. I also used the batting average, with all its shortcomings, in those analyses, which resulted in distortions because the not-out patterns vary drastically across career stages. And finally, the analyses included all players who were active back then. … [Read more...] about Did Kapil Dev really end his career as poorly as people believe he did?
Players from Test nations are more acutely aware of fawning interest from sycophants, can see through it and brush it off in grooming venues such as hotel bars. Associate players are typically unaccustomed to people showering them with attention, whether it is something as innocuous as a selfie or something more pronounced like a free drink at a bar, then a dinner, a free bat. By the time a player realises they are being roped into a corruption scheme, it may be too late. … [Read more...] about Betting in Associate and T20 leagues: Under the radar, over the top
