Biden aide Murthy says no US-wide COVID-19 lockdown planned as West Coast states advise against travel

· November 14, 2020 ·

WASHINGTON: United States President-elect Joe Biden's top coronavirus adviser said on Friday (Nov 13) that there were no plans for a wholesale nationwide lockdown to curb the surging COVID-19 pandemic, while three West Coast states jointly called for a halt to non-essential travel. The warning against unnecessary transit came as the daily increase in COVID-19 cases in the United States rose to a record of over 177,000 on Friday, the fourth straight day a new all-time high has been set, according to a Reuters tally of figures from US public health agencies. California, Oregon and Washington urged residents to avoid venturing out of state, citing concerns raised by health experts that the coming holiday travel season would accelerate already alarming spikes in COVID-19 infections and hospitalisations. Oregon Governor Kate Brown took the additional step of ordering social gatherings limited to no more than six people, effective immediately, a restriction she said she was prepared … [Read more...] about Biden aide Murthy says no US-wide COVID-19 lockdown planned as West Coast states advise against travel

Kanye West notches about 60,000 votes, hints at 2024 White House bid

· November 5, 2020 ·

NEW YORK: The United States was on knife's edge on Wednesday (Nov 4) waiting for electoral results, but the fate of one candidate was clear: Entertainer Kanye West will not win the 2020 presidential race - but still has future aspirations. The mercurial rapper, who decided to run for the nation's highest office late in the game as an independent candidate under the Birthday Party, received about 60,000 votes from the 12 states where he managed to get on the ballot. His numbers were less than a pin drop in a razor-thin presidential race, with Democrat Joe Biden holding the slimmest of leads over Republican incumbent Donald Trump as many ballots were still being counted in key states. READ: Trump campaign will immediately request recount in Wisconsin The hip hop star and fashion designer saw his highest numbers in Tennessee, where about 10,000 people cast their ballots for West, according to The New York Times. As COVID-19 hits swing states, Biden and Trump show sharp contrast

· October 25, 2020 ·

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio: United States President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Joe Biden gave starkly contrasting messages on Saturday (Oct 24) about the COVID-19 pandemic, taking their campaigns for the White House on the road to swing states where COVID-19 cases are surging again. Trump addressed a few thousand supporters at a tightly packed, in-person, outdoor rally in North Carolina, one of the battleground states in the Nov 3 election. He again said America was turning the corner in the fight against COVID-19 and mocked Biden's more cautious campaigning style. Biden, a former vice president, addressed supporters in vehicles at two drive-in rallies in Pennsylvania and warned of a grim winter ahead unless the Trump administration did a better job of halting the disease, which has killed 224,000 Americans. Opinion polls show Biden leading Trump nationally, but the race is much closer in the battleground states that will decide the election. COMMENTARY: The case for … [Read more...] about As COVID-19 hits swing states, Biden and Trump show sharp contrast

West accepts Moscow was right to approve COVID-19 vaccine, Russian official says

· September 1, 2020 ·

MOSCOW: Comments by a senior US official and moves by Britain towards the possible fast-tracking of COVID-19 vaccines show the West now accepts Russia was right to approve a vaccine as early as August, a Russian official said on Monday. Russia granted regulatory approval to a COVID-19 vaccine this month after less than two months of human testing, prompting some Western experts to question its safety and efficacy. The head of the US Food and Drug Administration has since said he would be willing to bypass the normal approval process to authorize a COVID-19 vaccine as long as officials were convinced the benefits outweigh the risks. The British government last week set out plans that would allow Britain's medical regulator to grant temporary authorisation for any coronavirus vaccine before it has received a full license if it meets safety and quality standards. The United States and London were now "exactly following the example of Russia," said Kirill Dmitriev, the head of … [Read more...] about West accepts Moscow was right to approve COVID-19 vaccine, Russian official says
