LONDON: Police investigating the deaths of 39 people in a truck near London said they had arrested three more suspects on Friday (Oct 25) on suspicion of human trafficking amid signs that some of the dead may be Vietnamese. As forensic experts began the process of identifying the victims, the Vietnamese embassy in London said families from the southeast Asian country had got in touch about missing relatives. There were growing concerns at least 10 of the victims could have been from Vietnam. Police have said they believe the dead were Chinese but Beijing said the nationalities had not yet been verified. Police arrested a man and woman, both aged 38, in Warrington, northwest England, and a 48-year-old man from Northern Ireland at London's Stansted Airport. They are suspected of conspiracy to traffic people and manslaughter. ‘Follow me on LinkedIn,’ UK PM Johnson tells businesses
LONDON: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson opened an account on professional networking site LinkedIn on Tuesday, saying he wanted to use it as a way to talk more directly to the business community. Listing his job title as "Prime Minister of the United Kingdom", Johnson's first post on the website was a video thanking businesses for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic and promising to "do right by them too". "Businesses of all sizes are vital to this country and I want to connect more directly with you as we build back better, stronger than ever before," he said. Despite him being seen as pro-business when he championed financial services when he was mayor of London, Johnson's record has been clouded by his widely reported dismissal of companies' concerns about Britain's exit from the European Union. By joining LinkedIn and its 700 million users worldwide, Johnson is opening another route to bypassing traditional media outlets that have been sharply critical of his … [Read more...] about ‘Follow me on LinkedIn,’ UK PM Johnson tells businesses
BBC to set target for working class employees in new boss’s diversity drive to better ‘represent audiences’
THE BBC is to set a target for recruiting more working class employees as part of a diversity shake-up under its new director general. Bosses wants staff to declare their social background following criticism the Corporation is stuffed with posh people who went to private school. They will be quizzed on their education, if they were eligible for free school meals and what jobs their parents had when they were growing up. The results will be used to set a "meaningful target", which aims to give more people from working class backgrounds opportunities within the BBC. Figures from the BBC’s most recent annual report showed that - of staff who responded - 61 per cent came from a family where the main breadwinner was a professional or senior manager. Just 26 per cent had manual workers as parents. I firmly believe that at this time you’ll rarely hear or see anyone like me on BBC TV or network radio. This has to change. Mike Sweeney, BBC Radio Manchester … [Read more...] about BBC to set target for working class employees in new boss’s diversity drive to better ‘represent audiences’
Terror checks intensify as London Bridge attack enters election fray
LONDON: Britain's Boris Johnson said Sunday (Dec 2) he had ordered the security services to step up monitoring of convicted terrorists released early from prison, prompting accusations that he was exploiting the London Bridge attack for political gain less than two weeks before elections. The prime minister revealed officials were scrutinising about 74 people with terrorist convictions who had been released early from prison like Usman Khan, who left jail last December and went on to stab two people to death in Friday's rampage. "They are being properly invigilated to make sure there is no threat," Johnson told the BBC. "We've taken a lot of action as you can imagine in the last 48 hours." Under the review of released terror convicts, police in the West Midlands said they had arrested a 34-year-old man "on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts". Nvidia to buy chip designer Arm for US$40 billion as SoftBank exits
TOKYO/SAN FRANCISCO/LONDON: Nvidia Corp will buy UK-based chip designer Arm from Japan's SoftBank Group Corp for as much as US$40 billion, the companies said on Monday, in a deal set to reshape the global semiconductor sector. The sale puts a vital supplier to Apple Inc and others across the industry under the control of a single player and faces likely pushback from regulators and rivals to Nvidia, the biggest U.S. chip company by market capitalisation. Within hours of the announcement, critics questioned how Arm would maintain its open approach under U.S. ownership and at a time of friction with China. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasised that Arm would retain its neutral licensing model and expand it by licensing out Nvidia intellectual property for the first time. "We want to grow Arm and make it become even greater," he told analysts on a conference call. For Softbank, the sale marks an early exit from Arm, which it acquired for US$32 billion.
