The bloodied photos of the Swiss couple who were beaten up at Fatehpur Sikri shocked India. But other tourists who have visited the monument have their own harrowing tale to tell Many of us might remember the ’90s number from Pardes, “Do dil mil rahe hain”. Apart from Shah Rukh Khan, what made the song memorable was the stunning backdrop — the ruins of Fatehpur Sikri, a romance in red sandstone that became Emperor Akbar’s ode to social harmony and acceptance. But for many tourists today, this Unesco World Heritage site is now more about denial than acceptance — denial of the freedom to be left alone, to see what you want to see, not to be bothered by strangers for a selfie. It has recently hit headlines for a horrifc incident where a Swiss couple was chased and assaulted by a bunch of young men. Anyone who has been to Fatehpur Sikri recently can identify with this feeling of being hunted by random strangers. Two years ago, Rohit Arora, employed … [Read more...] about How a world heritage site became a tourist nightmare

Editor's note: On August 10, 2019, Jeffrey Epstein died in an apparent jailhouse suicide. For more information, see The Daily Beast's reporting here. From the Virgin Islands comes a tale of two Jeffreys, and the difference great wealth can make when it comes to sex crimes—until it doesn't. Both Jeffreys were convicted of shameful crimes that required them to register as sex offenders in whatever state or jurisdiction they resided. Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida to engaging a minor in prostitution in a 2007 plea deal only a super-rich guy could have swung. He did 18 months locked up, mostly in a private wing of the Palm Beach County jail, where he only stayed at night, returning each morning to “work release.” He then proceeded to prove that a registered sex offender with enough money in the Virgin Islands can just continue to come and go from a private island off the coast of St. Thomas, with an ever-changing entourage of girls who appeared to be … [Read more...] about A Tale of Two Jeffreys: How the Virgin Islands Welcomed a Rich Sex Offender—and Punished a Poor One

They announced the start of their journey to parenthood on ITV's Lorraine back in January . And now nearly a year later they have announced their happy news, with Hannah saying the 22-week-old foetus is "about the size of a papaya and the weight of five tangerines." Hannah said Jake asked her within a week of their first date if she wanted children - and it was unlikely their relationship would have gone any further if she had said 'no'. "I did want children but I never thought I’d end up having them. I thought I’d never have a boyfriend, let alone get married. But here we are: I’m going to be a mum," she said. Hannah, 32, and Jake, 41, met three years ago and married at the beginning of 2018 - making headlines around the … [Read more...] about Ex-soldier and actor will be UK’s first transgender parents after both transitioning
The headline was a grabber. “Trump says media is ‘Enemy’ after shooting, bomb plot,” the Associated Press reported around 9 a.m. Monday morning. The article said: President Donald Trump on Monday accused the media of being “the true Enemy of People” in the wake of a mass shooting and a mail bomb plot. Trump tweeted: “There is great anger in our Country caused in part by inaccurate, and even fraudulent, reporting of the news.” He added that the media “must stop the open & obvious hostility & report the news accurately & fairly.” But something jumped out right away. Why the partial quote? Why did the AP edit Trump’s posts on Twitter? And why didn’t the news service include the tweet itself? The answers were quite simple: Because what Trump said and what the AP wanted to say Trump said were two completely different things. Here’s what Trump said (and we’ll run the two tweets he posted, too): … [Read more...] about Associated Press Says Trump Calls All Media ‘Enemy Of The People.’ It’s A Lie, He Didn’t.
