Spreading of misinformation and fake news on social media platforms has proven to be extremely dangerous. Despite several measures, platforms like Facebook and Twitter haven’t been able to combat it successfully. Now, Twitter has launched a new initiative to do so. Called Birdwatch, the new website will allow people to identify information in Tweets they believe is misleading and write notes that provide informative context. In a blog post, Twitter revealed that this is a pilot project as of now which has been launched in the US only. Keith Coleman, vice product, product, Twitter said in the blog post that in this first phase of the pilot, notes will only be visible on a separate Birdwatch site. “On this site, pilot participants can also rate the helpfulness of notes added by other contributors,” noted Coleman. Twitter Birdwatch unveiled to help users fact check misinformation
New York | Bengaluru: Twitter Inc. has launched a pilot program that allows users to flag tweets that they believe are misleading and write notes to provide context. The project, called Twitter Birdwatch, is initially offered in the United States, the social media firm said in a blog post.Twitter and other social media companies have been under pressure to combat misinformation on their platforms. The microblogging platform had last year started adding labels and warnings about misinformation on the site, including about the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2020 US elections.Birdwatch is on a separate section of Twitter, and only pilot participants, who apply to the program, will write posts identifying and rebutting misinformation.
