WASHINGTON: A senior US Republican lawmaker said on Monday he hoped Congress would pass a US$740 billion defence bill this week by a margin large enough to ward off President Donald Trump's veto threat, which he said risked "punishing" the troops. Trump has vowed to veto the annual National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, if it does not repeal a law that protects companies like Alphabet Inc's Google, Twitter Inc and Facebook Inc from liability for what appears on their platforms. US Representative Mac Thornberry, a former chairman of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, said failure to pass the NDAA would threaten policy provisions in the massive bill intended to combat threats from China and Russia, and harm troops more directly by cutting their pay and delaying construction of new housing. WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Tuesday (Dec 8) to ensure that priority access for COVID-19 vaccines procured by the US government is given to the American people before assisting other nations, a senior administration official said on Monday. Trump, who has faced sharp criticism for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, is eager to take credit for the speedy development and distribution of a vaccine. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters that the order would set up a framework for US government agencies to help other countries procure the vaccine as well. It was unclear why an executive order was needed to ensure that the vaccines would be distributed in the United States.
