Responsible tourism is everyone’s business and the industry has the potential to become the cornerstone of the nation’s economy, says the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT). “If developed sustainably, the travel industry has the potential to deliver tax revenue and jobs to every province throughout the nation and become a major driver of the economy,” said VNAT Head Nguyen Van Tuan at a recent conference in Ho Chi Minh City. He said last year travellers spent US$15 billion (VND338,000 billion) in Vietnam, and tourism provided jobs for millions of Vietnamese, which in turn generated millions of dollars in tax revenue for the State, provincial and local governments. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on June 29 presented the Vietnam Tourism Award 2010 to 30 hotels, 20 travel agencies and 15 tourism service enterprises at a ceremony in Hanoi. This year awards went to ten big outbound tourism firms, including Saigontourist, Ben Thanh Tourist, Tan Dinh Tourist, Apex Vietnam, Exotissimo, Vietnam Tourism JS Company in Hanoi and HCM City, Hoa Binh Tourist, Vietravel and Huong Giang Tourism. Ten inbound travel firms also won recognition, including Vitours, Lua Viet, Viet Culture, Youth Tourism, and Hanoitourist. Viet Nam needs to develop a modern tourism sector, based on its advantages in nature, culture, geography, politics and people, said Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan. Vietnamese tourism must become a key Southeast Asian, Asian and global destination, he said, addressing the 50th anniversary of the country’s Industry held in Ha Noi on July 6. To turn tourism into a key sector, attracting 10-15 million international visitors and 60 million domestic tourists a year, a 10-year strategy to develop Viet Nam tourism by 2020 must rapidly be completed, he said.
