A Federal Court in NSW on Friday found Unique International College Pty Ltd made false or misleading representations and engaged in a pattern of behaviour that amounted to unconscionable conduct, in a case brought by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. The court found that in 2014 and 2015, Unique sales staff targeted vulnerable communities using door-to-door sales tactics to sell diploma courses ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 under the now abolished VET FEE-HELP government loans scheme. Several of the people enrolled by Unique lived in former Aboriginal missions in Bourke, Wagga Wagga, Walgett and Taree. In the 2014-15 financial year, Unique enrolled over 3600 students and was paid approximately $57 million by the Commonwealth. In total, the college accessed $139.9 million in Commonwealth funds. “The Court found that Unique’s marketing deliberately targeted people from disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, including regional Aboriginal communities,” … [Read more...] about Dodgy college gave away iPads to ‘supercharge exploitation’ of vulnerable communities, court finds

Huge Setback For Chidambaram As Delhi HC Rejects Anticipatory Bail Plea In INX Media Case
New Delhi: In a major setback to P Chidambaram, rhe Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of the Congress leader and former Union minister in the corruption and money laundering cases related to the INX Media scandal. Justice Sunil Gaur, who delivered the judgement, had reserved the decision on January 25. Reports say immediately after the court order, Chidambaram met party colleague and senior advocate Kapil Sibal. Sibal, along with a team of lawyers, are currently exploring possibility of mentioning the appeal against the order in the apex court. During the arguments on Monday, both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate had opposed Chidambaram's plea on the ground that his custodial interrogation was required as he was evasive during questioning. Both the probe agencies had contended that during Chidambaram's tenure as finance minister, FIPB clearance was granted to the media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007. Abortion Of Abnormal Foetus Cannot Be Denied Even If Gestation Is Beyond 20 Weeks: Delhi High Court
New Delhi: Right to terminate an abnormal pregnancy cannot be denied merely because gestation has continued beyond 20 weeks, the Delhi High Court has said while allowing a 25-week pregnant woman's plea to abort her foetus which had enlarged kidneys and was not expected to survive. A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar said the section of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act which prohibits abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy even if the foetus is abnormal, and the provision which relaxes this restraint if there is an immediate threat to the life of the mother, have to be considered cumulatively and not in isolation. "Seen thus, we are convinced that, even in a case where the condition of the foetus is, as in the present case, incompatible with life, the rigour of section 3(2) deserves to be relaxed, and the right to terminate the pregnancy cannot be denied merely because gestation has continued beyond 20 weeks. "Law, needless to say, cannot be … [Read more...] about Abortion Of Abnormal Foetus Cannot Be Denied Even If Gestation Is Beyond 20 Weeks: Delhi High Court
