Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the family of the late George Floyd , said Sunday that the doctrine of qualified immunity, which grants government officials civil immunity for on-duty actions, allows police officers to get away with “reprehensible conduct.” CBS’ Margaret Brennan noted that qualified immunity is a major bone of contention in the Senate as it prepares to take up a police reform bill passed by the House, and asked if there was room for compromise on the issue. “We understand that politics is the art of compromise,” Crump said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “However, on qualified immunity, this has to be addressed, because this is the thing that allows bad police officers to engage in reprehensible conduct like we saw with George Floyd, and… hundreds of Black people being killed. It shields their behavior.” After passing the House, the George Floyd Justice Act now heads to the Senate. Disabled man ‘used mobility scooter like battering ram’ to knock over two pensioners, 88 and 90, at bus stop
A disabled man used his mobility scooter like a 'battering ram' to knock over two elderly women waiting at a bus stop, a court heard. Former psychiatric nurse Aaron Ali, 40, allegedly reversed over Doris Collins, 88, and Joan Benjafield, 90, while they were out shopping in Welling, Kent, on June 14. Ali is also accused of ambushing 72-year-old Michael Gibson in another random attack in nearby Woolwich High Street on January 2. Ms Collins and Ms Benjafield were waiting to get on a number 96 bus when the ramp came down and Ali rode off on his scooter. But Ali claims he had a 'diabetic crash' before running into the two women. Ali, who qualified as a nurse in 2001, claimed he was left disabled for life after he was attacked by a patient while working at Shaftesbury House, Ealing. Giving evidence at Southwark Crown Court he said: '"I have got diabetes, I have PTSD, anxiety and depression. "I take ten different medication. I take 120 milligrams of morphine every day and … [Read more...] about Disabled man ‘used mobility scooter like battering ram’ to knock over two pensioners, 88 and 90, at bus stop
Apple: Jailbreaking could knock out transmission towers
Apple has told the U.S. Copyright Office that modifying the iPhone's operating system could crash a mobile phone network's transmission towers or allow people to avoid paying for phone calls. The claims are Apple's contribution to the Copyright Office's regular review of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), a law that forbids the circumvention of copy control mechanisms. Apple says that modification of the phone's software, a process known as jailbreaking, could lead to major network disruptions. Jailbreaking gets around the copyright control features that prohibit, for example, the installation of applications unapproved by Apple. Apple's arguments , filed June 23, seek to rebut a request to the agency by the digital rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) that modifications to the iPhone's software do not violate the DMCA and should be allowed. The U.S. Copyright Office holds hearings every three years to consider requests to make exceptions to the … [Read more...] about Apple: Jailbreaking could knock out transmission towers
Manchester United Finally Sign Bruno Fernandes
It is true that Manchester United might had an under-par season to date. Yet, despite an expectancy for them to be busy in the January transfer window it took them until now to land their first signing in the shape of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who signed for an initial £47m . How the deal unfolded Manchester United have been long term admirers of Fernandes with strong rumours linking them with a move for him back in the summer window, but nothing materialized at that time. Fast forward a few months into the season though and it became clear that United were in desperate need of three things – leadership, experience and quality – and Fernandes fits the profile perfectly hence the murmurings of a substantial bid gaining traction again. It was widely believed that a deal would be concluded early in the month, but Sporting rebuffed the initial bids from United as they were considered to be stacked in the English club’s favour with respect of add ons that were … [Read more...] about Manchester United Finally Sign Bruno Fernandes
