Rest in Peace, iPod

· January 29, 2014 ·

Oct. 23, 2001: The iPod The very first iPod launched with "1,000 songs in your pocket." It had 5GB of storage space, weighed 6.5 ounces, featured a 160 x 128 pixel display and FireWire connectivity and cost $399. July 2002: Second Generation iPod As well as an increased capacity topping out at 20GB, the second generation iPod got an important new feature -- Windows compatibility. This came not via iTunes, but through MUSICMATCH Jukebox, with software called "iPod for Windows." April 2003: Third Generation iPod 2003 was a big year for the Apple iPod. In April, the third generation model was introduced. Thinner and lighter, this complete redesign now boasted a touch-sensitive interface, dock connector and 30GB capacity. USB syncing and the launch of the iTunes Music Store solidified the early iPod ecosystem. These elements helped Apple hit some milestones in 2003 -- one million iPods sold (which rose to two million by the end of the year) and 25 … [Read more...] about Rest in Peace, iPod

Disable the Internal Microphone on your Mac

· June 25, 2010 ·

All Macs have a microphone included in them, but if you want to disable the internal microphone on your Mac, you can do so through a variety of methods. We’ll cover the two easiest approaches to turning off the microphone; reducing the input volume so that no sound is picked up by the microphone, and also by selecting a different and nonexistent audio input source so that the Mac will not detect audio whatsoever. Both methods effectively disable the microphone on a Mac Note these work to disable the Macs internal built-in microphone in all versions of Mac OS X and with just about every Mac. To disable an external microphone, simply unplug it from the Mac. How to Disable the Internal Microphone on Mac by Reducing the Input Volume to 0 Launch System Preferences from the  Apple menu in the upper left corner Click on “Sound” preference panel Click on the “Input” tab Drag the “Input volume” slider all the way to the left, as seen in the included screenshot – you can … [Read more...] about Disable the Internal Microphone on your Mac

Is this iPhone 5? Pictures of alleged iPhone with larger screen leak out of China

· April 25, 2011 ·

Are these pictures of the next-gen iPhone 5 ? Images have surfaced on Chinese website MIC Gadget that show what appears to be a white iPhone with a larger screen. The side-by-side image above shows a traditional iPhone 4 display on the left, and on the right is a mystery iPhone display piece with a larger screen area, which could be iPhone 5 (or a fake, of course). MICGadget says the following about the images, but doesn’t specify where they came from: Man, we don’t know if this is real, but at least we can see that it has a larger display and edge-to-edge glass. Maybe it’s a mockup, but we are sure that it’s not an iPhone 4. The similarities with iPhone 4 are obvious, which corresponds with recent rumors that iPhone 5 will share the design of iPhone 4 and feature mostly internal hardware upgrades . Another image shows the device apparently turned on: Remember, things like this are easy to photoshop and fake, so don’t be too convinced yet. Also, the … [Read more...] about Is this iPhone 5? Enable HDMI Audio & Toggle Sound Output from Mac OS X Quickly

· May 4, 2013 ·

If you’ve ever connected a Mac to something else like a TV through HDMI, you’ve probably noticed that, unlike the video source, sound output does not automatically change to the newly connected hardware. This is intentional, but many users misinterpret that as a problem with their HDMI adapter or cable, or even their Macs output capabilities, when in fact it’s almost always just a matter of adjusting the OS X audio output settings. The standard approach is to go through System Preferences to Sound settings and change output, but there’s actually a much faster way to adjust where sound output is directed, and it can be done from anywhere, without going into preferences at all. Toggle Audio Output Quickly on the Mac This works in virtually every version of OS X, revealing all audio sources: Hold down the Option key and click the Sound icon Find the desired audio output destination under “Output Device” and select it from the pull-down menu The change is … [Read more...] about Enable HDMI Audio & Toggle Sound Output from Mac OS X Quickly
