Westerners leave mark on Ayutthaya
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai looks at samurai armour at a museum in the Japanese settlement in Ayutthaya. Deer skin was among export goods used as a cushion in samurai armour. Westerners were prominent in Ayutthaya, the former capital of the kingdom of Siam, in centuries past. They left historical records, architecture, language and cultural links of their contact with Iudea, as it was known at the time. Today they help us understand the area's history and Thailand's policies on international relations. "Ayutthaya is a multicultural society but there were clear conditions in the use of land. Churches could be set up but permission was needed, trading was allowed but had to be done via a system under the Treasury Department," said Assoc Prof Predee Phisphumvidhi, deputy dean of Mahidol University's Faculty of Liberal Arts. Foreign community settlement and access by foreign ships was limited to the south of the Ayutthaya city island with Pom Phet … [Read more...] about Westerners leave mark on Ayutthaya
Love Island’s Yewande takes another swipe at rival Lucie and says mis-pronouncing her name ‘is racist and malicious’
LOVE Island's Yewande Biala has today taken another swipe at rival Lucie Donlan, saying that mis-pronouncing her name is "racist and malicious". It all started earlier this week when the Irish scientist-and-reality star, 25 , said she had to “correct” Lucie on how she said her name “multiple times”. Now, Yewande has spoken again about the issue in a column for The Independent . She wrote: "There is a longstanding history of forced assimilation as a way to maintain the power structure. "Dominant groups dismissing certain names as “too hard” is tied to racism and other forms of oppression. She also said: "When someone doesn't take the time to learn the proper way to pronounce another person's name, or worse – intentionally mocks it for being “too difficult” to pronounce, or tries to ascribe another name to make themselves feel comfortable – it can come across as malicious." It all started when Yewande shared a lengthy tweet where she described her experience of … [Read more...] about Love Island’s Yewande takes another swipe at rival Lucie and says mis-pronouncing her name ‘is racist and malicious’
Love Island’s Amber Gill slams Lucie Donlan for ‘micro aggressions’ after revealing she refused to say Yewande’s name
LOVE Island's Amber Gill has slammed Lucie Donlan for "micro aggressions" after revealing she refused to say Yewande Biala's name in the villa. Lucie , 22, sparked backlash earlier this week when she accused Yewande, 26, of "bullying" her when the competed on the ITV2 reality show back in 2019. However, Yewande hit back saying that the surfer "refused to call her by her name" , with 23-year-old Amber and fellow Islander 28-year-old Amy Hart also leaping to her defence and backing her claims . Now Amber, who won the series, has taken to her Twitter page once again to shed some more light on Lucie's treatment of Yewande as she explained why her behaviour was so offensive. She told fans: "Btw asking someone you don’t know (well) who has an ethnic name if you can call them a 'nickname' is not a term of endearment. "It’s a micro aggression & you don’t have the right to say there is no malicious/sinister intent, you just don’t do it. "I thought that was … [Read more...] about Love Island’s Amber Gill slams Lucie Donlan for ‘micro aggressions’ after revealing she refused to say Yewande’s name
US, UK, 3 other courts confirm $1.4 billion arbitration award against India
NEW DELHI: Courts in five countries including the US and the UK have given recognition to an arbitration award that asked India to return $1.4 billion to Cairn Energy plc - a step that now opens the possibility of the British firm seizing Indian assets in those countries if New Delhi does not pay, sources said. Cairn Energy had moved courts in nine countries to enforce its $1.4 billion arbitral award against India, which the company won after a dispute with the country's revenue authority over a retroactively applied capital gains tax. Of these, the December 21 award from a three-member tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Netherlands has been recognised and confirmed by courts in the US, the UK, Netherlands, Canada and France, three people with knowledge of the matter said. Cairn has started the process to register the award in Singapore, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Cayman Islands, they said. The registration of the award is the first step … [Read more...] about US, UK, 3 other courts confirm $1.4 billion arbitration award against India
