Mulan stars such China-born actors as Jet Li, Gong Li, Donnie Yen and Liu Yifei, and is based on a Chinese folk story. The latter had sparked a #BoycottMulan social media frenzy in summer 2019 when she wrote that she stood with the Hong Kong police who were engaged in an oppressive crackdown on anti-government demonstrators and journalists. Thinking at the time had been that people in China would deliberately go to the movie in order to protest the boycott, and might benefit box office. But a lot of time has passed since then. … [Read more...] about ‘Mulan’ Now Eyeing China Bow In $20M-$25M Range After Soft Saturday – International Box Office
Refresh for latest…: Disney’s Mulan ultimately settled for a $23.2M three-day opening in China, including previews. This is about where we saw it landing yesterday after downgrading projections for the Middle Kingdom launch. The movie from director Niki Caro ended up in the No. 1 spot for the session there, but was bested on Sunday by local title The Eight Hundred (now at an estimated $389M cume). … [Read more...] about ‘Mulan’ Moola Muted In China With $23.2M Opening – International Box Office
Tenet’s lackluster showing at the U.S. box office obviously is not entirely Christopher Nolan’s fault, as only 65 - 75% of movie theaters are open at limited capacity in the U.S. with major markets like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco still closed due to the global pandemic. As we predicted, Tenet, with its budget of $200 million, has a long way to go before it hits the $400 million mark it needs to hit to break even. Although it’s struggling financially, Tenet is faring better than Disney’s live action Mulan which similarly boasts a $200 million budget to Tenet but has only grossed $37.6 million globally as the #BoycottMulan movement continues to grow in Asia. Unlike Warner Bros., Disney made the decision to skip the U.S. box office altogether, making Mulan available to rent on Disney+ streaming service for $30 dollars. It seems clear that it’s still a tough moment to release your $200 million film. You have to imagine Nolan and his execs at … [Read more...] about Rakes In $200 Million at the Global Box Office, Struggles Domestically

As expected, Sunday was down versus last weekend when the reissue of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar gave the market a nice jolt. Nevertheless, Sunday was up slightly over Saturday’s final RMB 44.7 ($6.4M) to RMB 45.3M ($6.5M). Leading the charge was DreamWorks/Amblin/Universal’s 1917 with a No. 1 three-day of $5.27M per Maoyan.
