SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese regulators have recently approved four funds focused on China’s new Nasdaq-style STAR Market, the official Shanghai Securities News reported on Saturday, as fund managers seek to capitalize on China’s push to nurture home-grown tech firms. The four funds approved at the beginning of December brings the total number of such funds to 23, the paper reported, adding that nearly 100 more were currently awaiting approval. The approved funds do not exclusively invest in companies listed on Shanghai’s STAR Market, the paper said, but are more broadly STAR Market “themed”, also investing in high-tech companies on other domestic boards. The STAR Market launched in July to a stellar reception that saw some shares rocket as much as 520%. It now comprises more than 50 companies. Designed to allow pre-profit companies to list and for venture capitalists to exit investments in loss-making start-ups, it was also meant to boost … [Read more...] about China regulators approve more STAR Market funds – Shanghai Securities News

Singapore invokes fake news law over opposition party posts
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore’s government invoked a fake news law on Saturday to order an opposition party to publish corrections on two social media posts and an article on its website about local employment, an official statement showed. It is the third time that authorities have used the law, called the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA), since it came into effect about two months ago. But it is the first time it has been used against a political party. The government ordered the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) to issue corrections to a sponsored Facebook post, another post on its page on the social network as well as an article on its website about the city-state’s job market. The article said a rising proportion of local professionals, managers, executives and technicians (known as PMETs) were losing their jobs. That was disputed by the Manpower Ministry, which said the employment of PMETs had been rising steadily since 2015. … [Read more...] about Singapore invokes fake news law over opposition party posts

2 days after Space Station news, Isro calls for ‘docking experiments’ on PSLV stage-4
BENGALURU: Just two days after the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) chairman Sivan K announced India is looking to have its own Space Station, the space agency has called for proposals of experiments, including docking—a key technology for space station establishment and functioning—to be carried out on an orbital platform (PS4-OP). The PS4 is the last stage of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket, which until now used to go waste after putting the spacecraft into the desired orbit. Isro, in the last two attempts tried to keep PS4 alive in space, and was successful. As the next step, it has now called for experiments from national and international institutions. The experiments will cover six areas, including space docking “The PS4-Orbital Platform (PS4-OP) refers to a novel idea formulated by ISRO to use the spent PS4 stage (fourth stage of PSLV) to carry out in-orbit scientific experiments for an extended duration of one to six months. Isro sowing seeds of future technology to help next generation go beyond Earth
NEW DELHI: In the last 50 years since it was founded, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has come a long way by overcoming technological hurdles and achieving several milestones. From launching sounding rockets carrying a payload of just 30-70kg to 150km altitude from a church-turned-launchpad at Thumba in Kerala’s Trivandrum (now Thiruvananthapuram) in early 1960s, Isro is now launching 4,000-kg payload to the geostationary orbit at 36,000-km altitude. The agency’s giant leap in space technology has been phenomenal whether it is the development of cryogenic engine for powering its heavy-payload launcher or making India’s heaviest satellite Gsat-11 weighing over five tonnes. When Isro was set up on August 15, 1969, the country didn’t have space infrastructure nor expertise to launch big rockets. But now the agency has an array of rockets in its arsenal. Its PSLV can not only lift over a hundred satellites in one attempt, but can also put satellites in … [Read more...] about Isro sowing seeds of future technology to help next generation go beyond Earth
