An important recent incident persuaded me to write this piece. Yakabe Yoshinori, Japan’s deputy general consul in Ho Chi Minh City, held a meeting with Dong Nai Province authorities on February 14 to discuss construction of Long Thanh International Airport. It was reported that the Japanese government is still undecided whether to provide official development assistance funding for the project. At the meeting, Yoshinori said his government has not made a final decision because the airport remains controversial in Vietnam. Some people are calling for upgrading Tan Son Nhat International Airport in nearby Ho Chi Minh City instead of building a new one in Dong Nai. The Ministry of Defence will hand over 20 hectares of land near Tan Son Nhat International Airport to the Ministry of Transport for an airport expansion, said an official. Tan Son Nhat airport Speaking during an online conference last week, Phung Quang Thanh, Minister of Defence, said the ministry will allocate an additional 20 hectares of land for an additional expansion. The land would be used to improve transport infrastructure and expand Cong Hoa Street, which connects to the airport, he said. Vo Van Tuan, deputy head of the general staff of Viet Nam People's Army, told Nguoi Lao Dong (the Labourer) newspaper on Tuesday that the ministry will allocate the land as soon as possible to reduce overloading at the airport. HCM City (VNA) - The Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) held a ceremony to welcome the 600,000 th safe flight in 2015 at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on December 8. At the event, VATM’s Director General Pham Viet Dung said the company has completed all of the goals targeted for the year. The VATM’s 600,000 safe flights since the beginning of this year showed an 18 percent rise from last year. The company has gained an estimated revenue of 3.67 trillion VND (163 million USD), including a gross profit of 589 billion VND (26 million USD), and contributed nearly 1.93 trillion VND (85 million USD) to the state budget. Since its establishment in 1993, the VATM has conducted over 6,148 million safe flights and contributed more than 1.573 billion USD to the budget.
