The Supreme Court’s order to leave nine new districts out of Tamil Nadu civic polls, originally scheduled for December 27 and 30, led to the election commission withdrawing its notice for the polls on Friday, leaving everyone guessing if the polls will be held as per earlier schedule in the remaining districts or be delayed. Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka could follow in the footsteps of Gujarat and Chhattisgarh to declare a 'no new coal' policy, a new analysis said on Thursday. This implies these states will not need any new coal power plants in the future, and all of their future energy demands could be cost-effectively met by renewable and flexible based energy alone. The report, 'Winds of Change: No New Coal States of India', was released by New Delhi-based climate communications organisation Climate Trends. It said its findings were on the analysis of current economic indicators, the states' installed power capacities, electricity generation and renewable energy potential, as well as the impacts of air pollution and water stress that is aggravated by coal power. Karaikal youth dies in Sudan ceramic factory blast
Venkatachalam, 27, of V. Kottapady village in Karaikal district, has been killed in a fire accident at a ceramic factory caused by a LPG tanker blast in Sudan. His family was informed of his death by the Sudanese Embassy in New Delhi on Thursday.Venkatachalam joined the factory as a technician based on his ITI qualification and work experience in a ceramic unit in Karaikal in September.His parents were initially led to believe that he was alive and they received a 23-second audio clip of his conversation with a co-worker from Tamil Nadu. In the clip, Venkatachalam seeks the help of a co-worker over phone. Coimbatore: A court here on Friday granted bail to 25 people, arrested for staging a protest over the recent wall collapse that claimed 17 lives in Nadur village, over 50 km from here. The protesters had demanded the arrest of the owner of the house a portion of the compound wall of which collapsed on four tiled roof houses, killing 17 Dalits on Monday. After being arrested, they were remanded to judicial custody. When their bail applications came up for hearing on Friday, District Munsif and Judicial Magistrae P M Raikhana Parveen granted them the relief. Decks cleared for rural local body polls in 27 districts
The Supreme Court on Friday cleared the decks for rural local bodies in 27 districts in Tamil Nadu. Polling will take place in two phases, on December 27 and 30.The court gave Tamil Nadu four months to complete delimitation of its nine reconstituted districts and conduct panchayat elections at the village, intermediate and district levels. The districts are: Vellore, Tirupattur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi.The AIADMK and the DMK have hailed the verdict. The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) on Friday issued orders cancelling the poll notification issued by it on December 2 announcing polls in rural local bodies across the State.A communication from the TNSEC Secretary L.
