No decision on T20 World Cup before July – New Zealand chief

· April 23, 2020 ·

WELLINGTON: Any decision on whether the Twenty20 World Cup has to be rescheduled from its October start date due to the COVID-19 pandemic will not be made until July, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board chief David White said on Thursday. The International Cricket Council will discuss contingency plans for the tournament in Australia, as well as ways of restarting the sport once the pandemic subsides, at a meeting later in the day but White said "no decisions will be made". Travel restrictions and border controls aimed at containing the spread of the novel coronavirus have brought sport to a standstill around the world and left many events scheduled for later in the year in doubt. "Cricket Australia is working very closely with the government authorities and they are planning for it (T20 World Cup) to go ahead in October and November," White told reporters. "There's contingency planning going on and lots of discussions but no decisions will be made. New Zealand stars cleared to continue Australia series despite Auckland lockdown

· March 1, 2021 ·

The Black Caps lead 2-0 in the five-game series, with Guptill collecting player of the match honours in the second four-run victory last week. But Auckland has entered a seven-day lockdown after a COVID-19 case was detected. That development has prompted the fourth game, set for Auckland on March 5, to be moved to Wellington, where the upcoming third match will also be played. NZC shift matches against Australian men, England women to Wellington But the New Zealand players based in the city will still be available to feature. Guptill, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman had been self-isolating due to the new measures, but they have each tested negative and will join training again on Tuesday (March 2). All four Auckland based players (Chapman, Guptill, Neesham and Phillips) self-isolating in Wellington have now received negative COVID tests and will be able to train with the team tomorrow. #NZvAUS — BLACKCAPS (@BLACKCAPS) March 1, 2021 More … [Read more...] about New Zealand stars cleared to continue Australia series despite Auckland lockdown

ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Complicated wordings, zeal to make climax more exciting denied New Zealand title

· July 16, 2019 ·

First, there was a deflection of the throw from the fielder that had deflected off a diving Ben Stokes' bat to go for four boundary runs and the home team was awarded six runs, making the equation a lot easier for them. And then, after the Super Over too ended in a tie, England were awarded the game by the virtue of hitting more boundaries. WC Special | Stats There is something eerie about the ICC rules for big events. They make simple things complicated in an effort to import a football-like excitement in games that go down to the wire. The irony is that while some of the ICC's rules are too complicated (especially their wordings that look like real legal deals!), there are others that appear flimsy and shallow, particularly when seen in the context of a tournament of the magnitude of the World Cup. First, about the deflection rule. It was a simple incident of the ball hitting the running batsman and getting deflected to reach the boundary. An unintentional act in … [Read more...] about ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Complicated wordings, zeal to make climax more exciting denied New Zealand title

NZ vs Australia: Final T20 shifted to Wellington due to COVID-19 lockdown, to be played behind closed doors

· March 1, 2021 ·

The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board on Monday (March 1) announced that the final T20 international of the five-match series between New Zealand and Australia has been shifted to Wellington from Bay Oval in Auckland and it will now be going ahead behind closed doors. The final T20 international of the three-match series between New Zealand women (White Ferns) and England women will also be played in Wellington behind closed doors. “The final Black Caps v Australia and White Ferns v England T20 double-header, scheduled for the Bay Oval on Sunday March 7, will now be played on the same date and time at Sky Stadium in Wellington. The change has been forced on NZC because of logistical complications arising from the transfer of this Friday’s second double-header from Auckland to Wellington,” the NZC said in an official statement. “The current Alert Level 2 protocols in Wellington mean all three double-headers – on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, will be played behind closed … [Read more...] about NZ vs Australia: Final T20 shifted to Wellington due to COVID-19 lockdown, to be played behind closed doors

Australia’s Labuschagne wants to flourish across formats

· May 4, 2020 ·

MELBOURNE: Australia's Marnus Labuschagne wants to enhance his power-hitting ability in one-day internationals as he seeks to establish himself as an all-format player, the 25-year-old said on Monday. Labuschagne has been a revelation in test cricket since stepping up as Steve Smith’s concussion substitute at Lord’s in last year's Ashes series in England. In the subsequent series against Pakistan and New Zealand, the right-hander smashed four centuries in five tests, including a maiden double hundred in Sydney earlier this year. The South Africa-born batsman made his one-day debut in India earlier this year and smashed his maiden century in this format against the country of his birth in March. "There's heaps to improve on, that's for sure," the top order batsman said in a video conference. "Personally, in one-day cricket, an area I want to continue to get better at is that later stages in the innings, the boundary options at the back-end of a one-day game. "Batting at … [Read more...] about Australia’s Labuschagne wants to flourish across formats
