MELBOURNE: Officials in New Zealand and Australia, hailed globally for their early signs of success in combating the spread of the coronavirus, said on Monday (Apr 13) it is too soon to start easing social distancing rules or reopening their economies. The rate of new coronavirus cases has abated significantly in both countries without straining the capacity of their health systems. New Zealand has enforced a wide-ranging lockdown and Australia is also tightly restricting many activities. New Zealand recorded its fifth death due to coronavirus on Monday, but new confirmed cases in the Pacific nation of about 5 million rose only by 15, a sixth of what was seen in early April, bringing the total of cases to 1,064. According to Australia's health ministry, the number of new confirmed cases rose on Monday by 33, the slowest rate in a month and less than a tenth seen two weeks ago. Australia has now recorded 6,322 cases, with 61 deaths. Health Minister Greg Hunt said it was too soon … [Read more...] about New Zealand, Australia say too soon to ease restrictions despite COVID-19 slowdown

WELLINGTON: The Wellington Phoenix have been cleared to travel from New Zealand to Australia to begin their preparations for the resumption of the A-League next month, the team said on Friday. New Zealand stars cleared to continue Australia series despite Auckland lockdown
The Black Caps lead 2-0 in the five-game series, with Guptill collecting player of the match honours in the second four-run victory last week. But Auckland has entered a seven-day lockdown after a COVID-19 case was detected. That development has prompted the fourth game, set for Auckland on March 5, to be moved to Wellington, where the upcoming third match will also be played. NZC shift matches against Australian men, England women to Wellington But the New Zealand players based in the city will still be available to feature. Guptill, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman had been self-isolating due to the new measures, but they have each tested negative and will join training again on Tuesday (March 2). All four Auckland based players (Chapman, Guptill, Neesham and Phillips) self-isolating in Wellington have now received negative COVID tests and will be able to train with the team tomorrow. #NZvAUS — BLACKCAPS (@BLACKCAPS) March 1, 2021 More … [Read more...] about New Zealand stars cleared to continue Australia series despite Auckland lockdown

Australia, New Zealand honour military personnel from home as coronavirus scuppers ANZAC day parades
SYDNEY: Thousands of people across Australia and New Zealand on Saturday (Apr 25) honoured their country's military personnel in private ceremonies held in driveways and on balconies as the coronavirus outbreak forced traditional ANZAC Day memorials to be cancelled for the first time in decades. Scores of people in Australia and New Zealand typically attend dawn services or marches on Apr 25 to commemorate the bloody battle on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey during World War One. But with mass gatherings now banned in order to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, authorities asked locals to hold mini-services at their homes. Dubbed "stand at dawn," New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern stood on her driveway along with her fiancé and his father. "This year a new threat faces all nations as the impact of the coronavirus deepens worldwide," Ardern said in an emailed statement. "As we face these significant challenges, we remember the courage of those who have served … [Read more...] about Australia, New Zealand honour military personnel from home as coronavirus scuppers ANZAC day parades
