He made America’s representative institutions greatly biased in favor of Republicans. Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer Photo: REUTERS/Yuri Gripas In the United States, every season is campaign season. Four months after America last went to the polls, Democrats are still refining their autopsies of the 2020 race and already governing with an eye toward the 2022 midterms. Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, Republicans are trying to figure out just how firm Donald Trump’s grip on their party really is — and debating whether that grip should be stronger or weaker. To gain some insight into these matters, Intelligencer turned to our favorite socialist proponent of ruthlessly poll-driven campaigning, David Shor. A veteran of the 2012 Obama campaign, Shor is currently head of data science at OpenLabs, a progressive nonprofit. We spoke with him last week about how his analysis of the 2020 election has changed since November, what Democrats need to do to keep Congress … [Read more...] about David Shor on Why Trump Was Good for the GOP and How Dems Can Win in 2022

Rep. Steube: Florida ‘Absolutely’ Serves as a Model for GOP to Win National Elections
ORLANDO, Florida — The Republican Party should “absolutely” look to Florida as a model ahead of the 2022 elections, Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) said during an exclusive interview with Breitbart News on Friday. Appearing at CPAC, Steube pointed to the America First policies touted by former President Trump, which proved to be popular even among non-traditional Republican voters. “So I hope we’re going to focus on those America First policies and concentrate on that going into 2022. We only have to take five House seats back to take the majority in Congress. You don’t hear anybody in the mainstream media talking about that, because that doesn’t affect their purpose and their liberal ideology, but five seats is not a lot of seats,” he said, noting that redistricting will likely bode well for the GOP. “We’ve got redistricting here in Florida. With the census data, Florida is probably going to pick up one or two seats by population. Texas is going to pick up a seat. I think maps are … [Read more...] about Rep. One year on, lessons from Lombok quake inspire change at Mount Rinjani
LOMBOK: "We were cooking breakfast that morning, just after 6am, when the ground shook," said 31-year-old Sahnan as he recalled the moment a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Lombok on Jul 29, 2018. Sahnan had been one of around 600 people stranded at Mount Rinjani's famous crater lake, Segara Anak or Child of the Sea, because of fog and heavy clouds. “It didn’t occur to us that there was an earthquake. We heard a rumbling sound and it was only then that we realised an earthquake was happening. It was chaos after that,” he told CNA. “We calmed down after the first jolt, but then there was a stronger aftershock that scared us more, because it caused even more rocks to tumble down from all sides of the lake. I felt like the world was ending and we were all so scared,” he said. More climbers became trapped at the summit due to consequent landslides, bringing the total number of those stranded to 1,226. One Malaysian climber was killed after she was crushed by a pillar at … [Read more...] about One year on, lessons from Lombok quake inspire change at Mount Rinjani
The Big Read: Strides made, but some way to go for Government to quench thirst for data
SINGAPORE: From population and employment figures to white papers, government data was vital in getting business at Caregiver Asia off the ground. The online platform, launched in 2015, links freelance caregiving professionals to those who need their services. Chief executive officer Yeo Wan Ling said it used population statistics to find out where elderly people live in Singapore, to deploy freelance carers where their services are needed most. Through white papers and figures from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the labour movement, the firm also found out that many freelancers were not protected by legal agreements or work-injury-compensation insurance. It then set out to develop products to plug these gaps in the market, Ms Yeo said. Indeed, the availability of public data, coupled with breakneck advances in technology, has made once tortuous tasks - such as finding a freelance nurse, part-time cleaner or even a home - much easier these days.
