Queen saved man from jail by intervening in court case to share vital piece of evidence

· March 3, 2021 ·

After Princess Diana's tragic death, her butler and  close friend Paul Burrell was among a small group tasked with going through her belongings. Her Kensington Palace apartment was filled with beautiful dresses, expensive jewellery and her handwritten letters. But the princess' mum and sister were keen to destroy some of the items and ripped up much her correspondence - which Paul disagreed with. He believed everything should be saved for Princes William and Harry to go through when they were older. Diana's family didn't agree, but he decided to do it anyway - taking some of her things back to his Cheshire home and storing them in the loft. However in June 1998, 10 months after Diana's death, a police offer saw him pulling up at Kensington Palace at 3.30am, going inside, and coming out carrying two dresses and a wooden box. Three years later, an investigation was launched into the sale of some of Diana's private items being sold in the US. Supreme Court Hears Arizona Cases on Absentee Votes and Ballot Harvesting

· March 3, 2021 ·

The Supreme Court heard a pair of cases on Tuesday challenging Arizona’s election laws. Democrats claim that state laws on ballot harvesting and absentee ballots violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) and the Constitution’s Fifteenth Amendment. Arizona law requires each voter to cast his ballot in his assigned local precinct. The Grand Canyon State’s laws also forbid most third parties from collecting and delivering a voter’s ballot. “The Court has a stark choice between two systems here,” Supreme Court heavyweight Michael Carvin said in conclusion of the Arizona Republican Party’s argument. “Ours is clear, and we think derived directly from the text, and is easy to apply.” Chief Justice John Roberts kicked off the questioning of Carvin, with the chief questioning Carvin’s argument that VRA and the Constitution are violated when a legislature intends to disadvantage a racial group, rather than the Democrats’ argument that the law is violated whenever plaintiffs can … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Hears Arizona Cases on Absentee Votes and Ballot Harvesting

Indonesian Supreme Court declares Jokowi among those liable for 2015 forest fires resulting in regional haze: Reports

· July 23, 2019 ·

JAKARTA: The Attorney-General of Indonesia on Monday (Jul 22) defended the government after the country's Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling which blamed President Joko Widodo and his cabinet ministers, as well as regional administrations, for failing to control the wildfires in 2015. The wildfires which raged through Indonesia in 2015 caused thick haze to engulf the country and neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia, the Jakarta Post reported on Monday. “The conclusion is the government should fulfil its obligation to protect its citizens against the disaster," said Supreme Court spokesman Abdullah after the ruling on Friday. "It should work on necessary efforts to stop wildfires from happening." Attorney-General H M Prasetyo on Monday said the government has acted to tackle the wildfires issue. "Recent statistics show that forest fires have decreased in numbers. Many individuals and companies have also been charged in court, and will eventually be convicted," he said, … [Read more...] about Indonesian Supreme Court declares Jokowi among those liable for 2015 forest fires resulting in regional haze: Reports

Kangana Ranaut moves Supreme Court seeking transfer of cases to Shimla

· March 2, 2021 ·

Actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister have moved the Supreme Court for transfer of four criminal cases registered against them in Mumbai to Shimla. In their joint petition, Ms. Ranaut and her sister, Rangoli Chandel, said they apprehend danger to their lives and property in Mumbai. The cases include FIRs registered on separate complaints filed by lawyer Ali Kashif Khan Deshmukh and Munawar Ali, accusing the sisters of allegedly trying to spread communal hatred. The sisters also sought the transfer of a criminal defamation case registered on a complaint filed by lyricist Javed Akhtar. The sisters, represented by advocate Neeraj Shekhar, said the cases have been filed to malign their public image. They said they have a “stellar reputation and huge fan following among the Indian public”. They said they were “public-spirited citizens”.
