Fitbit is testing blood pressure monitoring – and it wants your help

· April 9, 2021 ·

Fitbit is investigating whether some of its existing fitness trackers can be used to measure blood pressure, and is asking its users to help out. The study, run by Fitbit Labs , will look at whether the Fitbit Sense can monitor pulse arrival time (PAT), which is the time it takes for a pulse of blood to reach your wrist after your heart beats. This isn't a direct measure of blood pressure, but could be a useful proxy. After woman killed at senior living facility, BRPD follows blood trail to suspect holding knife

· April 12, 2021 ·

After finding a woman dead from apparent stab wounds in her apartment at a Baton Rouge senior living facility, police followed a trail of blood and encountered her neighbor, who answered his door holding a bloody knife, records show. Frances Marinelli, 67, was pronounced dead after police responded to reports of an incident around 3:10 p.m. Sunday at Calais House, a complex near the intersection of Lobdell Boulevard and Bishop Ott Drive. In a police report, officers say they found the victim "covered in blood" inside her apartment. They followed "a heavy blood trail" leading to another apartment, knocked on the door and met then met Larry Woodard holding a bloody knife, police said. Woodard, 69, was detained pending an investigation and later booked into jail on one count of second-degree murder. Police wrote in the arrest report that Woodard had "made several unsolicited statements advising officers that he had stabbed the victim." While parts of the report are redacted … [Read more...] about After woman killed at senior living facility, BRPD follows blood trail to suspect holding knife

Tourist faces jail in Dubai after doctors found legally-smoked cannabis in blood

· April 11, 2021 ·

An American tourist faces years in jail in Dubai after doctors called police when they tested his blood and found cannabis - which he'd legally smoked before he arrived in the country. Peter Clark, 51, from Las Vegas, flew to Dubai on February 21 for a few days to look at some professional recording studios. But he was then admitted for emergency hospital treatment after falling ill with pancreatitis. Before he was discharged the hospital took a urine sample to test for drugs and found residue traces of hashish - which he says he smoked long before he left the USA. Doctors then reported it to police who went to the hospital to charge Peter, who was still in a drowsy state having not been able to eat or drink since he was admitted. On March 3 Peter was handcuffed and taken to Al Barsha police station, where he was put in a detention cell with three other men. Peter was suffering hyperglycemia and respiratory alkalosis and had a blood sugar level more than ten times … [Read more...] about Tourist faces jail in Dubai after doctors found legally-smoked cannabis in blood

People who have recovered from COVID-19 may be at risk of developing blood clots: Singapore study

· April 13, 2021 ·

SINGAPORE: People who have recovered from COVID-19, especially those with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions, may be at risk of developing blood clots due to a lingering and overactive immune response, a Singapore study has found. The study, led by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) scientists, investigated the possible link between COVID-19 and an increased risk of blood clot formation, shedding light on the medium- and long-term consequences of infection, or “long-haul COVID”, NTU said in a news release on Tuesday (Apr 13). The team collected and analysed blood samples from 30 COVID-19 patients about a month after they had recovered from the infection and were discharged from hospital. In findings published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal eLife in March, researchers found signs of blood vessel damage in all 30 patients, possibly from a lingering immune response, which may trigger the formation of blood clots. "The findings may help to explain why some people … [Read more...] about People who have recovered from COVID-19 may be at risk of developing blood clots: Singapore study

Archaeologists find “lost golden city” buried under sand for 3,400 years

· April 12, 2021 ·

A team of Egyptian archaeologists has unearthed what some describe as an industrial royal metropolis just north of modern-day Luxor , which incorporates what was once the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes (aka Waset). The archaeologists dubbed the site "the lost golden city of Luxor," and they believe it may have been devoted to manufacturing decorative artifacts, furniture, and pottery, among other items. Hieroglyphic inscriptions found on clay caps of wine vessels at the site date the city to the reign of the 18th-dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep III (1386-1353 BCE), whose generally peaceful tenure was marked by an especially prosperous era, with Egypt at the peak of its international power. (Mud bricks at the site were also marked with Amenhotep III's cartouche.) There are more surviving statues of Amenhotep III than any other pharaoh. He was buried in the Valley of the Kings, and his mummy was discovered in 1889. Analysis revealed that Amenhotep III died between 40 and 50 … [Read more...] about Archaeologists find “lost golden city” buried under sand for 3,400 years
