Southampton edge Brighton in south coast derby

· December 8, 2020 ·

BRIGHTON, England: Southampton came from behind to beat traditional south coast rivals Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 in the Premier League on Monday as Jannik Vestergaard and Danny Ings cancelled out a Pascal Gross opener for the home side. German midfielder Gross fired Brighton ahead with a 26th-minute penalty before Vestergaard levelled with a superb header on the stroke of halftime and Ings turned the match on its head with an 81st-minute penalty. The result left Southampton fifth in the standings on 20 points from 11 games while Brighton stayed 16th on 10 points, four clear of the relegation zone. James Ward-Prowse handled an innocuous-looking ball in the area and Gross made no mistake with the spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Alex McCarthy the wrong way. Ward-Prowse made amends when he floated in an inviting corner for Vestergaard to head home inside the far post as Southampton pressed in the closing stages of the first half. When the match seemed to be heading for a … [Read more...] about Southampton edge Brighton in south coast derby

U.S. Navy Destroyer Challenges Beijing’s South China Sea Claim in Latest Op

· February 17, 2021 ·

A U.S. Navy destroyer sailed into the contested waters of the South China Sea on Wednesday, challenging "unlawful and sweeping maritime claims" by Beijing and other governments in the region. Guided-missile destroyer USS Russell conducted the Navy's second freedom of navigation operation in the area since President Joe Biden took office last month. The warship "asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the Spratly Islands, consistent with international law," said a statement by the U.S. 7th Fleet. The operation "upheld the rights, freedoms and lawful uses of the sea recognized in international law by challenging unlawful restrictions on innocent passage imposed by China , Vietnam and Taiwan." The statement continued: "Unlawful and sweeping maritime claims in the South China Sea pose a serious threat to the freedom of the sea. The United States challenges excessive maritime claims around the world regardless of the identity of the claimant." Beijing lays claim to all … [Read more...] about U.S. Navy Destroyer Challenges Beijing’s South China Sea Claim in Latest Op

Wind fans wildfire in California canyons, residents flee

· December 4, 2020 ·

LOS ANGELES: Powerful gusts pushed flames from a wildfire through Southern California canyons on Thursday (Dec 4), one of several blazes that burned near homes and forced residents to flee amid elevated fire risk for most of the region that prompted utilities to cut off power to hundreds of thousands. The biggest blaze began on late Wednesday as a house fire in Orange County's Silverado Canyon, where gusts topped 113 kmh “When crews arrived it was a fully engulfed house and the winds were extremely strong and they pushed flames into the vegetation,” said Colleen Windsor, a spokeswoman for the county's Fire Authority. The fire grew to more than 29 sq km and blanketed a wide area with smoke and ash. Crews struggled in steep terrain amid unpredictable Santa Ana winds that sent flames racing across major roads. Two firefighters were hospitalized after being treated on scene for injuries, said Fire Chief Brian Fennessy. He said their condition was not immediately known. … [Read more...] about Wind fans wildfire in California canyons, residents flee

100,000 in Southern California to evacuate as blaze grows

· October 27, 2020 ·

LOS ANGELES: Fast-moving wildfires forced evacuation orders for more than 100,000 people and seriously injured two firefighters in Southern California on Monday (Oct 26) as powerful winds across the state prompted power to be cut to hundreds of thousands to prevent utility equipment from sparking new blazes. A smoky fire exploded in size to more than 29 sq km after breaking out around dawn in Orange County, south of Los Angeles. Gusts pushed flames along brushy ridges in Silverado Canyon and near houses in the sprawling city of Irvine, home to about 280,000 residents. There was no containment. Two firefighters, one 26 and the other 31 years old, were critically injured while battling the blaze, according to the county's Fire Authority, which didn't provide details on how the injuries occurred. They each suffered second- and third-degree burns over large portions of their bodies and were intubated at a hospital, officials said. Nearby, a much smaller fire in the Yorba Linda area … [Read more...] about 100,000 in Southern California to evacuate as blaze grows

Elon Musk relocates to Texas from California

· December 9, 2020 ·

LOS ANGELES: Silicon Valley billionaire Elon Musk said on Tuesday (Dec 8) he had relocated to Texas from California as he wants to focus more on the new Tesla Inc plant and his SpaceX venture. Musk confirmed the move in an interview with Matt Murray, the Wall Street Journal's editor in chief. "The two biggest things that I got going on right now are the Starship development in South Texas ... and then the big new US factory for Tesla," the 49-year-old Tesla chief said. "It wasn't necessarily a great use of my time here (in California)". Texas might potentially offer some tax reprieve for the world's second richest man. It does not collect personal income tax while California has some of the highest state tax rates in the United States. A 670 per cent rally in Tesla shares this year has boosted Musk's net worth from US$27 billion to US$155 billion, just behind Amazon.com's Jeff Bezos, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. In a conversation touching a wide range … [Read more...] about Elon Musk relocates to Texas from California
