Cricket-South Africa has faith in COVID-19 protocols despite ‘negative’ England

· December 10, 2020 ·

CAPE TOWN: Cricket South Africa (CSA) is confident in its COVID-19 protocols despite the postponement of the One-Day International series against England, with interim board chairman Zak Yacoob describing the tourists as having a negative attitude. Yacoob said the postponement of the three match series, at England's request, had caused CSA reputational damage and warned the body would defend itself against "lies" as to the reasons behind the cancellation. The ECB said in a joint statement with CSA on Monday that the decision to postpone the tour was over concerns about the "physical and mental wellbeing" of the touring party. An unnamed South Africa player and two hotel staff members contracted COVID-19 inside the bio-secure environment. Two members of the England touring party initially returned positive test results as well, but these were later cleared as negative. "The fact is that they (the England team) were very negative," Yacoob told reporters on Thursday, … [Read more...] about Cricket-South Africa has faith in COVID-19 protocols despite ‘negative’ England

South Africa to make historic Pakistan return for test, T20 series

· December 9, 2020 ·

CAPE TOWN: South Africa will tour Pakistan next month for the first time in 13 years to play two tests and three Twenty20 Internationals, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The five-day matches form part of the ICC Test Championship and will be staged in Karachi (Jan. 26-30) and Rawalpindi (Feb. 4-8), before T20 fixtures at the same venues and Lahore, ending on Feb. 14. International cricket has returned to Pakistan in the past 15 months following a militant attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009 that killed six policemen and two civilians. The country has hosted Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe since September 2019, while England recently announced a short two-match 20-over series in October next year in the build-up to the T20 World Cup in India. "It’s pleasing to see so many countries making a return to Pakistan – a proud, cricket-loving nation," South Africa’s director of cricket, Graeme Smith, said in a statement. "I would like to thank the Pakistan … [Read more...] about South Africa to make historic Pakistan return for test, T20 series

Cricket: Australia monitoring COVID-19 security situation in South Africa

· December 8, 2020 ·

MELBOURNE: Cricket Australia are still planning for the tour of South Africa to go ahead in February but are monitoring the health situation after a insecurity failure in the country forced the postponement of England's one-day international series. England and South Africa's cricket boards called off the series after the players were subjected to a number of COVID-19 scares inside the teams' biosecure bubbles in Cape Town. The breaches have cast doubt on South Africa's ability to host touring teams, including Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia who are all set to play there in coming months. Australia are scheduled to play three tests in South Africa in February but have yet to fix dates with South African authorities. "The tour of South Africa is part of the World Test Championship and the Future Tour Program," a CA spokesman said on Tuesday. "We will continue to plan for the tour and monitor the biosecurity situation." South Africa has recorded more than 800,000 … [Read more...] about Cricket: Australia monitoring COVID-19 security situation in South Africa

England’s tour of Sri Lanka rearranged for January

· December 9, 2020 ·

REUTERS: England's tour of Sri Lanka will go ahead in January and will feature two test matches behind closed doors in Galle, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Wednesday. The ECB and Sri Lanka Cricket have agreed on bio-security and travel plans for the rearranged tour following the postponement of the series in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. England's touring party will arrive in Sri Lanka on Jan. 3 and play two tests in Galle starting on Jan. 14 and Jan. 22. The visitors will be subject to quarantine in Hambantota on arrival in Sri Lanka. During that period, the players will able to train for five days from Jan. 5-9 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium. England are scheduled to fly back from South Africa on Thursday following the postponement of the three-match One-Day International series after a number of positive COVID-19 tests. After the Sri Lanka series, England are hoping to complete their World Test Championship campaign … [Read more...] about England’s tour of Sri Lanka rearranged for January

Australia faces test of batting depth amid opening queries: Smith

· December 10, 2020 ·

MELBOURNE: Australia face a test of their batting depth against India with an injury cloud hanging over their top order, Steve Smith said on Thursday. Veteran opener David Warner has been ruled out of the first test in Adelaide, while his likely replacement Will Pucovski is recovering from concussion after being hit by a bouncer during a tour match. With incumbent Joe Burns also struggling for runs, Smith said Australia would find out how well their batting reserves would cope. "I think our depth is obviously going to be tested with Davey out and a few potentially new players coming in," the former captain told reporters. "It’ll test us out, no doubt, against a good Indian outfit .... They beat us out here last time and they’re a very good side. "Whoever is up there and whoever is in the team hopefully we all do our job and can have a successful summer." Although omitted from the final pink ball tour match starting in Sydney on Friday, uncapped Pucovski did not … [Read more...] about Australia faces test of batting depth amid opening queries: Smith
