Nestle launches plant-based Harvest Gourmet brand in China

· December 9, 2020 ·

BEIJING/SHANGHAI: Nestle launched its plant-based Harvest Gourmet brand in China on Wednesday (Dec 9), moving into the country's meat substitute industry that has seen a surge of interest from investors and brands over the past year. The Swiss food and drink giant said the brand, which is available in Australia and New Zealand, would offer burgers, sausages, nuggets and mince, and will also sell dishes aimed to appeal to Chinese taste-buds, such as kung pao chicken, braised meatballs and pork belly. Demand for alternatives to regular meat is surging due to concerns about health, animal welfare and the environment. Entrants to China's meat substitute market in recent months have ranged from domestic firms Zhenmeat and Starfield to U.S. firm Beyond Meat Inc, which has collaborations with Starbucks and Yum China's KFC chain. Harvest Gourmet products sold in China will be produced by Nestle's faux-meat factory in Tianjin, its first in Asia. The brand will open an online store … [Read more...] about Nestle launches plant-based Harvest Gourmet brand in China

China finds coronavirus on frozen meat, packaging from Latin America, New Zealand

· November 15, 2020 ·

BEIJING: The Chinese city of Jinan said over the weekend it had found coronavirus on beef and tripe and their packaging from Brazil, Bolivia and New Zealand, while two other provincial capitals detected it on packaging on pork from Argentina. China is ramping up testing on frozen foods after repeatedly detecting the virus on imported products, triggering disrupting import bans, even as the World Health Organization says the risk of catching COVID-19 from frozen food is low. In Jinan, capital of eastern China's Shandong province, the goods involved were imported by a unit of Guotai International Group, and Shanghai Zhongli Development Trade, the city's municipal health commission said late on Saturday. They entered through ports in Shanghai, it said, without naming the companies that shipped the products to China. More than 7,500 people who may have been exposed tested negative for coronavirus, it said. Football: Back in the bubble, Chinese Super League into playoff stages

· October 20, 2020 ·

SUZHOU: When Odil Ahmedov left Shanghai SIPG to join fellow Chinese Super League (CSL) club Tianjin Teda in August, the midfielder didn’t have to travel anywhere to meet his new coach and colleagues. He merely moved to a different part of the hotel both teams had called home since July, and took a seat at a new breakfast table. In a bid to complete the 2020 season in the midst of restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese Football Association decided to split the 16 top-tier CSL teams into two groups based in the hub cities of Dalian and Suzhou. So not only were the eight teams in each group based in those cities from July - five months late because of the coronavirus outbreak - but players, coaches, referees and federation officials were sharing the same hotel complexes, unable to leave, except to take the bus to the stadium on match days. “Football is a sport with many surprises, and in this special time and special environment, I don’t need to fly anywhere,” … [Read more...] about Football: Back in the bubble, Chinese Super League into playoff stages
