On March 13, Sage-El’s local school district in Montclair, New Jersey, locked down. She and her store, Watchung Booksellers, limped along the following week until March 21, when the state ordered all non-essential retailers to close their doors indefinitely. She never really closed, though, jumping on a surge in online orders from her website to essentially turn her operation into a small fulfillment warehouse. But she hasn’t fully reopened either. She recently began accepting visitors to her store by appointment, and handles sales through deliveries and back-door pickups. Over the next six days we visited several other remote islands and explored vast networks of lagoons. We made it to far-flung Linapacan, clinging to the sides of the boat as we traversed mountainous waves (at the bottom of the swell we couldn't see land). We snorkelled off the island's coast, saw an underwater wreck and beautiful coral reefs, trekked through jungle to a hidden Spanish fort, ate a pig fattened specially for us, sang karaoke with some villagers and hosted a full moon party - just us, the villagers and Miss Gay Palawan. According to Williams’ attorneys, Athena should have identified this variant as a mutation that could cause disease. By the time the company released the report, in mid-2007, there were two published scientific papers showing that people carrying Christian’s specific SCN1A mutation had Dravet syndrome. There were also patents used for diagnostic tests of such mutations, according to the complaint. What’s more, a scientist on one of those papers was a top lab director for Athena, and had signed off on Christian’s DNA test report.
