National Science Day (NSD) will be conducted on February 28 to commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect by Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. He went on to receive a Nobel Prize for this discovery in the year 1930. The day is celebrated to mark the importance of contributions made by scientists towards the development of our nation and the world as a whole. It is used to create awareness about the role of science in society. The theme for National Science Day 2021 is ‘Future of STI: Impact on Education Skills and Work’. Schools of Science & Technology, Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM), Hyderabad are organising ‘All India Essay Contest on Science and Technology’ on the eve of National Science Day. The topics are — Life during Covid-19, Online Teaching: Benefits and limitations and Social Ethics, Morals and Values. Guest lecture Meera Venkatesh, Former Director, Physical & Chemical Sciences, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Former Head, … [Read more...] about National Science Day to be held on February 28

NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute Releases New Accelerated Data Science Teaching Kit for Educators
As data grows in volume, velocity and complexity, the field of data science is booming. There’s an ever-increasing demand for talent and skillsets to help design the best data science solutions. However, expertise that can help drive these breakthroughs requires students to have a foundation in various tools, programming languages, computing frameworks and libraries. That’s why the NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute has released the first version of its Accelerated Data Science Teaching Kit for qualified educators. The kit has been co-developed with Polo Chau, from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Xishuang Dong, from Prairie View A&M University, two highly regarded researchers and educators in the fields of data science and accelerating data analytics with GPUs. “Data science unlocks the immense potential of data in solving societal challenges and large-scale complex problems across virtually every domain, from business, technology, science and engineering to … [Read more...] about NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute Releases New Accelerated Data Science Teaching Kit for Educators
The science of drinking all you like and not getting drunk
Do not try this at home. Don't try it at work, either. And please, please don't try it in your local restaurant, bar, or bar mitzvah. On the other hand, I have no control over your life, so I will just offer you this allegedly scientific information. Jim Koch, co-founder of the Boston Beer Company, says there's a way to drink as much as you want and not get proportionately drunk. Some might pause already to consider that there is no point drinking unless you at least have the hope of feeling a touch happy, giddy, or loose-limbed. Still, Koch says his method is very simple. All he does is swallow some Fleischmann's Dry Yeast before embarking on a severe session of beer-drinking. This isn't the finest-tasting thing with which to adorn one's mouth. So Koch told Esquire that he mixes it in with some yogurt to make it more palatable. "One teaspoon per beer, right before you start drinking," he said. Here's the science part, if you can bear it. Active dry yeast is blessed … [Read more...] about The science of drinking all you like and not getting drunk
NASA demonstrates why rocket science is still hard with the SLS test
The Space Launch System’s (SLS) development by NASA and a number of aerospace contractors proves that rocket science, which is really engineering to build spacecraft, is a term that describes something that is truly difficult for a reason. On Jan. 16, NASA performed the last test of the so-called green run series on the core stage of the SLS. During the test, all four main engines were to be fired for eight minutes. Unfortunately, the software commanded that the test be shut down after about one minute because of major component failure (MCF) in one of the engines. Later, NASA announced that the premature shutdown was caused by “conservative” test parameters and that the core stage was in “good condition.” If the fault had been experienced during an actual launch, the SLS would have continued to fly. ADVERTISEMENT The bigger problem is that the SLS has cost $17 billion , has taken 10 years to build and is still problem-prone. NASA and everyone else who builds rockets … [Read more...] about NASA demonstrates why rocket science is still hard with the SLS test
Puppy born with six legs and two tails branded ‘scientific miracle’ for surviving rare deadly condition
A PUPPY born with six legs and two tails has been hailed as a miracle by stunned scientists. She's called Skipper and vets think she's the first puppy in the world to be born alive with her conditions. Staff at Neel Veterinary Hospital in Oklahoma revealed on Facebook : "This is a miracle named Skipper. Literally. "She has survived longer than we suspect any other canine has (at just 4 days old - published research does not indicate one has been born alive) with her combination of congenital conditions. "You might notice she looks a little different - 6 legs! "She has a type of congenital conjoining disorders called monocephalus dipygus and monocephalus rachipagus dibrachius tetrapus which simply means she has 1 head and chest cavity but 2 pelvic regions, 2 lower urinary tracts, 2 reproductive systems, 2 tails and 6 legs among other things." The experts think the puppy was born this way because a fertilised egg tried to split into twins in the womb but didn't … [Read more...] about Puppy born with six legs and two tails branded ‘scientific miracle’ for surviving rare deadly condition
