· December 10, 2020 ·

REUTERS: South African Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio edged Australia's Sarah Gigante in a thrilling final sprint to win the inaugural UCI Esports World Championships and celebrate her 35th birthday in style. Cycling on the popular Zwift training platform, the women's race, featuring 54 participants, including double road world champion Anna van der Berggen and former world champion Annemiek van Vleuten, took place on the Watopia's 50km figure eight course. Moolman-Pasio surged into the lead with under 2kms to go after the use of a powerup and held off a late challenge from Gigante across the final 300 meters to clinch the victory by 0.064 seconds and take home a virtual and physical rainbow jersey. "It felt really awesome. I wasn't a fan of virtual training before the lockdown but to now win the virtual World Championships, I'm super proud," Moolman-Pasio said. "It's now time to celebrate." Sweden's Cecilia Hansen pipped American Laura Stephens to the final podium spot. … [Read more...] about Cycling-Moolman-Pasio sprints to victory in inaugural Esports World Championships

· November 30, 2018 ·

SINGAPORE: It's the most wonderful time of the year ... if you're a fan of all things Christmas, that is. For the fifth year running, Gardens By The Bay has brought its European-style Christmas fair to Singapore. Crowd favourites like luminaries - giant handmade light sculptures from Italy - are back, along with new offerings including a mirror maze and a magic show. The fair opens on Friday evening (Nov 30) and runs until Dec 26. Here are five things to look out for at Christmas Wonderland this year: 1. GET LOST IN A MIRROR MAZE For the first time, visitors can weave through a maze of mirrors within the main luminarie sculpture at the heart of Gardens By The Bay's Supertree Grove. Christmas Wonderland's organiser, Blue Sky Events, says the activity is an "absolute must". "We took inspiration from Alice in Wonderland; we took inspiration from all the different mazes (for it)," Blue Sky Events creative director Sarah Martin told CNA Lifestyle. Olympics-USOPC will not punish athletes for protests at Olympics

· December 11, 2020 ·

REUTERS: The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said on Thursday it will not sanction athletes for peacefully and respectfully demonstrating in support of racial and social justice. The USOPC's decision came in response to recommendations from an athlete-led council seeking change to Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter which prohibits any kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda. "The USOPC values the voices of Team USA athletes and believes that their right to advocate for racial and social justice, and be a positive force for change, absolutely aligns with the fundamental values of equality that define Team USA and the Olympic and Paralympic movements," USOPC chief executive Sarah Hirshland said in a statement. How to Be Sober and Not Hate Your Spouse

· February 24, 2021 ·

Source: Sarah Kilian/Unsplash It should have been a great evening. I was nicely wedged into the couch with a bowl of popcorn and two slavering dogs, and I was working my way through the entire series of The Queen’s Gambit . I was alone, and it was divine. Brian, my husband, had both our boys on a long day-trip involving socially distanced basketball. He was due to arrive soon, and I felt rested and rejuvenated after indulging in some badly needed alone time. An introvert mom’s longing for alone is never done. And then, they came home. The kid part was fine. They are my children and I missed them and I hugged them hard. I’m not a monster. The husband, however, was a different story. I leaned in to kiss him and I sniffed. And sniffed again. My husband had been drinking. To make a few things clear: Brian is not the alcoholic in the room. I am. He is a totally normal drinker with an annoying ability to have a beer every once in a while without subsequently wanting to … [Read more...] about How to Be Sober and Not Hate Your Spouse

Plastic pandemic: COVID-19 trashed the recycling dream

· October 5, 2020 ·

The coronavirus pandemic has sparked a rush for plastic. From Wuhan to New York, demand for face shields, gloves, takeaway food containers and bubble wrap for online shopping has surged. Since most of that cannot be recycled, so has the waste. But there is another consequence. The pandemic has intensified a price war between recycled and new plastic, made by the oil industry. It's a war recyclers worldwide are losing, price data and interviews with more than two dozen businesses across five continents show. "I really see a lot of people struggling," Steve Wong, CEO of Hong-Kong based Fukutomi Recycling and chairman of the China Scrap Plastics Association told Reuters in an interview. "They don't see a light at the end of the tunnel." The reason: Nearly every piece of plastic begins life as a fossil fuel. The economic slowdown has punctured demand for oil. In turn, that has cut the price of new plastic. Already since 1950, the world has created 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic … [Read more...] about Plastic pandemic: COVID-19 trashed the recycling dream
