LOS ANGELES: Modeling has shown that more than 60,000 homeless people could become ill with the coronavirus in California over the next eight weeks, badly straining the healthcare system, the state governor said on Wednesday (Mar 18). Hospitalisation rates for those infected with the flu-like disease was about 20 per cent, creating a requirement for additional hospital beds that could quickly overwhelm hospitals if the modeled predictions come true, Governor Gavin Newsom said. "Over the next eight-week period, we have modeled that of the 108,000 unsheltered Californians that are out on the streets, if you had an attack rate of about 56 per cent, you're looking at 60-plus thousand individuals that may have COVID-19," Newsom, a Democrat, said in a Facebook address to the state. L.A. Teachers’ Union: California’s School Reopening Plan ‘Structural Racism’
The United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA), the largest local teachers’ union in California, rejected Governor Gavin Newsom’s school reopening plan on Monday, calling it “”a recipe for propagating structural racism.” The plan, which was announced by Newsom and Democratic leaders in the state legislature, provides $6.6 billion for schools to accelerate the reopening process as coronavirus cases drop. “$2 billion would fund safety measures to support in-person instruction, such as personal protective equipment, ventilation upgrades and COVID-19 testing. $4.6 billion would fund expanded learning opportunities, such as summer school, tutoring and mental health services,” the governor’s office said in a press release. The key to the plan is a financial incentive: schools would lose 1% in eligible funding for everyday that they remain closed past the end of March for children in kindergarten through second grade. “Schools in the state’s Red Tier or better would be required to offer … [Read more...] about L.A. BEIJING/TOKYO: U.S. electric carmaker Tesla Inc plans to slash on-site staff at its Nevada battery plant by around 75per cent due to the coronavirus pandemic, the local county manager said on Thursday. No further details were available and it was not clear how many employees work in the factory. Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. REUTERS: Tesla Inc said on Thursday it will suspend production at its San Francisco Bay Area vehicle factory on March 24, ending a standoff with California authorities concerned about the spread of the coronavirus. The company said its New York solar roof tile factory also will temporarily suspend production, while operations at its Nevada battery plant will continue. "Despite taking all known health precautions, continued operations in certain locations has caused challenges for our employees, their families and our suppliers," the company said in a statement. Tesla's shares were down 8per cent in after-hours trading following the announcement. The decision to suspend production at the Fremont, California, plant comes as Tesla ramps up production of its Model Y sport utility vehicle at the factory.
