40 integrated day facilities for elderly by 2016: MCYS
SINGAPORE: By 2016, Singapore will have about 40 integrated day facilities (IDFs) serving up to 6,000 elderly persons. Speaking in Parliament today, Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Chan Chun Sing says the details on the location of the remaining IDFs will be announced in the next two to three months. He says by second quarter of next year, the ministry should complete the building of two new IDFs - one in Tampines and the other in Toa Payoh, and the upgrading of six existing day care centres to IDFs. Another new IDF at Serangoon will be completed in the second half of 2013. "In planning the number and distribution of eldercare facilities, we take into consideration the demographic profile of each region, the adequacy of existing services and the availability of suitable premises," said Mr Chan. "I am confident that most Singaporeans support the vision of ageing-in-place and understand the need for eldercare services to be developed within our … [Read more...] about 40 integrated day facilities for elderly by 2016: MCYS
Economists weigh in on impact of economic restructuring
SINGAPORE : This year's Budget was focused on addressing concerns over the widening income gap. The government sees raising productivity as key to boosting wages for low-income Singaporeans. But some economists have said the economic restructuring could be painful - for both employers and workers. Singapore's open external economy attracts global capital and workers of all stripes. That has the effect of pushing up asset prices while depressing wages for low-income workers. To counter this, the government has set aside S$3.6 billion to co-fund wage increases for Singaporean workers. Another S$500 million will be available to help businesses pay for productivity initiatives. Hoon Hian Teck, professor at the School of Economics at Singapore Management University, said: "If you take advantage of the enhancement of PIC, or the Productivity and Innovation Credit scheme, and say you invest in automation that will boost the productivity of your workers, then if your workers … [Read more...] about Economists weigh in on impact of economic restructuring
Ex-STTA president accused of conspiring in CBT trial
SINGAPORE: The trial of former Member of Parliament Choo Wee Khiang started on Tuesday, with the prosecution giving its account of Choo's role in a conspiracy to secure payment for a trainer who was "moonlighting". Choo, 58, faces one count of criminal breach of trust (CBT) allegedly committed in 2005 when he was president of the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA). The prosecution said in its opening address on Tuesday that between 2001 and 2003, former assistant coach Luo Jie had been moonlighting and had provided table tennis training to students of Fuhua Secondary School. Luo's work pass only permitted him to work for the STTA. The school did not pay him for the training when the matter was discovered. It is the prosecution's case that an upset Luo told Choo and Koh Li Ping, STTA's then high-performance manager, about this. In June 2004, the school engaged the STTA for table tennis consultancy and coaching services. The prosecution is accusing Choo of … [Read more...] about Ex-STTA president accused of conspiring in CBT trial
Wage Credit Scheme draws mixed reactions
SINGAPORE: Observers say the move by the Singapore government to subsidise the pay increase of low-wage workers will only go some way to help companies struggling with restructuring. But it is seen as a significant move in which the government recognises that meritocracy alone cannot be relied upon as a social leveller. Under the scheme, the government will co-fund 40 per cent of wage increases for Singaporean workers earning up to a gross monthly wage of S$4,000. Companies welcome the initiative but some say it will still be a struggle, especially when wages in certain industries have been depressed for so long due to cheap foreign labour. Andrew Khoo, honorary treasurer at Restaurant Association of Singapore, said: "Increasing wages is definitely a step in the right direction but is it enough to attract local Singaporeans into this industry? I think that's something we're not entirely sure about. "At this point in time, it's not an industry that a lot of Singaporeans … [Read more...] about Wage Credit Scheme draws mixed reactions
