WhatsApp is allowing users to make video and voice calls on their desktop for the first time. The messaging service plans to rival the likes of Microsoft 's Skype and Apple 's FaceTime by offering people the chance to voice or video call on a larger screen. WhatsApp said it made the move following a "significant increase" in people making calls on the platform during the coronavirus pandemic, when other video calling services like Zoom have also seen huge spikes in popularity. Group calls will still have to be made on mobile devices, but the Facebook -owned app has confirmed it is planning to expand its desktop offering to group calls in the future. "Answering on a bigger screen makes it easier to work with colleagues, see your family more clearly on a bigger canvas or free up your hands to move around a room while talking," a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a blog post. Republicans Move to Control Voting After Record 2020 Turnout
CHICAGO - Months after record-high U.S. voter turnout propelled Democrats to victory in the 2020 elections, giving them control of the White House and both houses of Congress, Republicans are attempting to reshape election laws in state legislatures across the nation. In state after state, Republicans seek to limit opportunities for early and absentee balloting that Americans flocked to last year — Democratic voters in particular. More than 2 million Iowans were registered to vote in the 2020 general election, a record in a state with a population of just over 3.1 million. Of 1.7 million ballots ultimately cast in Iowa last November, more than 1 million were submitted through the mail as absentee ballots — also a record — as many voters shunned the polls during a pandemic. Former President Donald Trump, a Republican, won Iowa but lost the national election to Democrat Joe Biden. Now Republicans, who … [Read more...] about Republicans Move to Control Voting After Record 2020 Turnout
Maza Russian cybercriminal forum suffers data breach
The Maza cybercriminal forum has reportedly suffered a data breach leading to the leak of user information. On March 3, Flashpoint researchers detected the breach on Maza -- once known as Mazafaka -- which has been online since at least 2003. Maza is a closed and heavily-restricted forum for Russian-speaking threat actors. The community has been connected to carding -- the trafficking of stolen financial data and payment card information -- and the discussion of topics including malware, exploits, spam, money laundering, and more. Once the forum was compromised, the attackers who took the forum over posted a warning message claiming "Your data has been leaked / This forum has been hacked." Information including user IDs, usernames, email addresses, messenger app links -- including Skype, MSN, and Aim -- and passwords, both hashed and obfuscated -- were included in the data leak. Flashpoint told ZDNet roughly 2,000 accounts were exposed. During discussions concerning the … [Read more...] about Maza Russian cybercriminal forum suffers data breach
