Bangkok breathes cleaner air during COVID-19 pandemic and experts want it to last

· April 28, 2020 ·

BANGKOK: Analysis of air quality in Bangkok since the Thai government began enforcing strict social isolation measures has found significant drop in dangerous pollution levels of more than 20 per cent, as compared with the same time last year. The average levels of PM2.5 - tiny atmospheric particulate matter mostly produced by vehicles, refineries and other heavy industries - were reduced by 22 per cent in roadside areas of the capital, and 15 per cent in air monitoring stations in general areas between Mar 15 and Apr 10. The amount of PM10, typically caused by agriculture, construction and smoke, is also significantly down and carbon monoxide has been almost slashed in half, according to the analysis of government data by one of the country’s leading air quality experts, Dr Supat Wangwongwatana, the former director general of Thailand's Pollution Control Department. “Now, the air quality is very, very good. In some areas, the air quality is even within the World Health … [Read more...] about Bangkok breathes cleaner air during COVID-19 pandemic and experts want it to last

Red Dead Online needs an in-game gold rush if it wants to bring new players to the frontier in 2021

· March 1, 2021 ·

From Oregon Trail emigrants to the infamous Forty-Niners, Expansion era America saw hundreds of thousands head westward in search of fortune. Their pilgrimage across miles of open country wasn't undertaken just for the adventure of it, after all, but for the promise of more – more money and more opportunity. Rockstar, by now an expert in Wild West history, surely knows this, yet Red Dead Online still struggles to live up to that pioneer expectation of great reward for those who seek it. Anyone who originally jumped into Red Dead Online back at launch will be well aware of the online sandbox's stingy, heavily monetised game economy, and while Rockstar has done a lot to alleviate some of that tension over the last two years, its efforts still aren't enough to motivate continued play in those outside of the diehard community. That's a shame because there's much to love about Red Dead Online, but its economy continues to get in the way of discovering its best qualities. Given how … [Read more...] about Red Dead Online needs an in-game gold rush if it wants to bring new players to the frontier in 2021

Trump Admin’s attempt to “red team” climate research gets people fired [Updated]

· January 12, 2021 ·

Update 1/12/2021, 6:15pm EST: NOAA has now joined OSTP in disavowing this material , stating, "NOAA was not involved in the creation or posting online of the climate change flyers that have been allegedly attributed to the Office of Science and Technology Policy, nor does NOAA endorse the flyers." Update 1/12/2021, 3:45pm EST: The OSTP has now released a formal statement on these documents via a pair of tweets , and it's an angry one. “Dr. Droegemeier was outraged to learn of the materials that were not shared with or approved by OSTP leadership," the statement reads. "He first became aware of the documents when contacted by the press, As a result, Dr. Droegemeier took swift action and the individuals responsible have been relieved of their duties at OSTP." That would still leave Legates and Maue with positions at NOAA, but there is probably not enough time left in the administration for them to even establish a role for themselves in that agency, much less do further … [Read more...] about Trump Admin’s attempt to “red team” climate research gets people fired [Updated]

Amazing ‘Red Lightning’ Photographed from Space

· August 25, 2015 ·

Like a giant jellyfish floating through the atmosphere, "red sprites" hover above thunderstorms in two new photographs snapped from space. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) captured two rare photographs of red sprites from above on Aug. 10. Red sprites are strange luminous phenomena that occur alongside more familiar lightning strikes. They're rarely seen from the ground because they occur above storms; they're also dim and hard to detect with the naked eye. "They're very exciting to look at, they create these fabulous visual images, but there is a lot that we still don't understand about them," said Ryan Haaland, a professor of physics at Fort Lewis College in Colorado who is involved in an ongoing project studying sprites. [ Images: Red Sprite Lightning Revealed in Stunning Photos ] Spritely images The first sprite photograph shows the phenomenon somewhere over Missouri or Illinois, according to NASA's Earth Observatory, which published the … [Read more...] about Amazing ‘Red Lightning’ Photographed from Space
