The lucky ones escaped with only their mobile phones smashed. Those less fortunate say they were beaten with sticks, taunted or attacked with dogs. Many allege they had large sums of money stolen. According to the testimony of migrants and monitoring groups, the Croatian police force is engaging in a systematic campaign of violence and theft against migrants and refugees attempting to find a route to western Europe through the country. The Guardian spoke to dozens of men in the Bosnian border towns of Velika Kladuša and Bihać, who said they had been subjected to violence at the hands of Croatian police after crossing into the country. Most women interviewed said they had not been targeted, but had witnessed attacks on men in their groups, although a minority of women said they had been beaten or strip-searched. Many people had mobile phones with mangled charger sockets and cracked screens, damage caused by the Croatian police, they said. Others said police had stolen their … [Read more...] about Refugees crossing from Bosnia ‘beaten and robbed by Croatian police’

Italian military officials have accused Matteo Salvini of “unprecedented interference” as tension mounts over the far-right interior minister’s policy of closing ports to rescued migrants. Salvini, who is also Italy’s deputy prime minister, sent a letter to the heads of the navy and coastguard reportedly ordering them to maintain the policy by paying close attention to events at sea, in particular the movements of Mare Jonio, a charity rescue ship that was seized in March after defying an order not to bring migrants to Italy. While the interior ministry oversees the police, which also received the letter, the navy and coastguard are within the remit of the defence ministry. Sources from the military and defence ministries told the news agency Adnkronos that Salvini’s directive had “crossed a red line” and represented an “improper pressure”. “The [directive] is a real and unprecedented interference in the recent history of the … [Read more...] about Salvini ‘crossed red line’ with refugee boat policy, says military
With a camp theme, the 2019 Met Gala was sure to attract some eye-popping looks. Research (Childs, 2009; Ramoutar, 2006) supports my contention that interracial couples are rarely depicted in films and novels, and when they do make an appearance, they are presented as inherently problematic, conflicted, and hyper-sexualized (Killian, 2013). In fact, black-white intimate relationships rarely survive narrative closure in literary and cultural depictions, including black literary works. Where’s the love? Over the past eight decades, cinematic interracial couples have encountered violence and death threats, and more often than not the relationship does not survive to the end credits (Ramoutar, 2006). For example, the interracial relationship in Borderline ends abruptly in a knife-fight between the lovers. In Touch of Evil, Los Robles is the Sodom of stereotypical border towns, replete with debauchery, drug use, and criminal activity, a menace lurking just across a line in the sand from the U.S. In this setting, the Latino-white couple (Charlton Heston, in … [Read more...] about Interracial Border Crossings in Cinema: Haters Gonna Hate
John Prescott is known both for plain speaking and for misspeaking, so his calling Ed Miliband “Red Ed” on the radio this morning is just as likely a slip of the tongue as it is a political judgment. But just how red is Ed? His father was a Marxist scholar Ralph Miliband was a Marxist sociologist who was considerably to the left of the Labour party that his younger son would go on to lead. His influence is obvious in Ed’s passion for politics; when the Daily Mail decided to attack Ralph as a man whose leftist views meant he “hated” Britain, it was enough to bring Ed out swinging. Miliband’s closeness to his father is often used as a stick to beat him with politically, but the truth is, despite sharing a critique of the way modern capitalism works, Ed wants to save it from itself, not bring down the system. He has a long history of activism Miliband has said his favourite time at university was the four weeks when he was engaged in a rent dispute with … [Read more...] about Just how red is Ed Miliband?
