WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump on Monday (Jul 9) announced Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee for the US Supreme Court, picking a conservative federal appeals court judge who survived a previous tough Senate confirmation battle and helped investigate Democratic former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s. Trump, with the unique opportunity to make two lifetime appointments to the nation's highest judicial body in his first 18 months as president, selected Kavanaugh, 53, to replace long-serving conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement on June 27 at age 81. Kavanaugh was picked by former president George Bush to serve on the influential Washington-based appeals court in 2003. Contentious confirmation hearings in the Senate delayed his confirmation until 2006. Prior to his appointment, Kavanaugh worked as a lawyer in the White House under Bush. Some conservatives activists have criticised Kavanaugh for his ties to the Bush family and some of his rulings, … [Read more...] about Trump picks conservative Kavanaugh as US Supreme Court nominee

Supreme Court Justice Richard Gabriel faced harassment accusation while a candidate for Colorado’s high court
A harassment accusation made nearly eight years ago against Colorado Supreme Court Justice Richard Gabriel, then a judge on the state Court of Appeals, by a newly hired law clerk was settled quickly and quietly, according to two people with knowledge of the agreement, essentially ensuring it would not sully his shot at the high court. To safeguard that secrecy, the Colorado Judicial Department had the female appellate law clerk who made the accusation in September 2013 – then a 34-year-old who was a year out of an Ivy League law school – sign a non-disclosure agreement that kept her on the payroll for a year in return for her promise not to sue, the sources confirmed for The Denver Post. The woman claimed the judge and a male law clerk in the court created an uncomfortable work environment for her shortly after her arrival in August 2013, the sources said. In an email to The Post, Gabriel said that “any suggestion that I engaged in any form of harassment of anyone at any time is … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Justice Richard Gabriel faced harassment accusation while a candidate for Colorado’s high court
A black mirror for policy makers: Looking at data protection for minors
By Amar Patnaik ‘The history of childhood is a nightmare from which we have only recently begun to awaken’. This observation made by deMause, an investigator in psycho-histories in 2005 regarding traditions of child-rearing in different times and cultures, holds good for each age. He expounded that the evolution of child rearing gives insight into the development of a particular society. If this is the yardstick, what does that say about India’s development when a mechanism to ensure data privacy of children is absent, while their presence online is normalised through formal government approval due to COVID induced physical meeting restrictions. Enormity of the problem As of 2019, the report of the Internet and Mobile Association of India noted that almost two-thirds of the internet users in India fall into the age brackets of 12-29 years. The report found that from a total number of 451 million monthly active internet users, over 66 million were in the age group of … [Read more...] about A black mirror for policy makers: Looking at data protection for minors

A suit that AMC is dismissing as being because of the avarice of the uber-agency. “Having recently completed its audit of AMC’s accounting records, it is now clear that AMC’s wrongful conduct extends well beyond artificially deflated license fees,” said the breach of contract and declaratory judgment-seeking complaint filed this morning in New York Supreme Court ( read it here ). “In addition to withholding hundreds of millions of dollars from the creators of the hit television series The Walking Dead through improper self-dealing, which is the subject of litigation between the parties currently pending in this court, AMC has used a variety of shady accounting practices, described below, to withhold tens of … [Read more...] about CAA “Greed” Is At True Heart Of New $10M ‘Walking Dead’ Suit Declares AMC – Update
How did conservative India come to repeal S377’s ban on consensual gay sex?
INDIA: Some have hailed it as a step towards freedom from discrimination, humiliation and oppression. Certainly, India’s Supreme Court ruling on Section 377 (S377) of the Penal Code has given a new lease of life to millions who had been living under the weight of criminality and in the shadow of fear. READ: India's Supreme Court ends colonial-era ban on gay sex Not only was there an overwhelming response from gay rights activists and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, there was also support from the main political parties, like the opposition Congress party. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party did not oppose the judgment, while the Hindu group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) even supported the ruling, saying that gay sex was not a crime but a moral issue. While S377, which criminalises sexual activities "against the order of nature", remains in force in relation to sex with minors and bestiality, the court ruled last month that its … [Read more...] about How did conservative India come to repeal S377’s ban on consensual gay sex?
