MADRID: Real Madrid are back within touching distance of the top of La Liga after they punished another Atletico Madrid slip against Levante on Saturday (Feb 20) by beating Real Valladolid 1-0. Atletico had the chance to stretch their lead to 11 points this week by winning back-to-back games against Levante but instead they followed a 1-1 draw on Wednesday with a surprise 2-0 loss, meaning a five-point advantage became only six. Real Madrid cranked up the pressure again by edging to a win over struggling Real Valladolid, Casemiro's second-half header cutting the gap to just three points, albeit with Atletico still owning a game in hand. "It's not because Atletico lost. We believe we can win the league," said Casemiro. "There are still 42 points left, that's a lot of points." The swing in momentum comes at a bad time for Atletico, who face Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday, and it feels significant given it has coincided with a resurgence, in La Liga at least, for … [Read more...] about Football: Real Madrid close on top spot after Atletico stumble again

Football: Real Madrid cruise to victory over Valencia
MADRID: Real Madrid's Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos were on target in the first half as the hosts easily beat listless Valencia 2-0 on Sunday to make it three wins in a row in La Liga. Benzema got Zinedine Zidane's side off to a strong start in the 12th minute when he collected a pass from Kroos on the edge of the area and had enough time and space to pick his spot and fire into the far bottom corner. Kroos, who missed Tuesday's 2-0 home win over Getafe through suspension, doubled their lead shortly before halftime, finishing off a flowing move by driving a first-time shot low into the net from the edge of the area. The victory took Real back into second place on 49 points, five behind leaders Atletico Madrid who beat Granada 2-1 on Saturday and have two games in hand. Valencia are 12th on 24. With Atleti, Barcelona and Sevilla all on relentless runs of form, Kroos said Real could not afford to drop any more points if they wanted to keep up with the pacesetters. "The … [Read more...] about Football: Real Madrid cruise to victory over Valencia

[ MORE: Europa League draw: Man Utd, Spurs, Arsenal learn last-16 foes ] Jimenez has undertaken a (deliberately) slow return to action since suffering the horrifying injury in Premier League action nearly three months ago, and that approach has paid off, according to Espirito Santo — quotes from our partners at Sky Sports : “Totally confident, totally confident. “For sure, the speed is the speed we need to follow. We need to be aware of the circumstances. Avoid any kind of contact. He has been able to participate in the initial part of the training sessions. Just being with his teammates is a big help for him and for us. “We are following the right protocols with no rush. Delighted he is getting better and better day by day. So it is fantastic for us.” Since the start of … [Read more...] about Nuno ‘totally confident’ Jimenez will play again this season
