Commentary: Why the New Zealand mosque gunman deserved an unprecedented sentence

· August 28, 2020 ·

HAMILTON: Was Brenton Tarrant’s silence and acceptance of sentence in court a final act to expand his notoriety? Was his disavowal of previously expressed ideological views a trick? A person capable of planning the Christchurch mosque attacks so methodically may well have mapped the last public chapter, too. By saying little and expressing no real remorse, alone and without even his own lawyer, was he hoping the world would see a determined stoicism, an enigma? Or did he simply realise the controls around court behaviour were so well designed that he couldn’t hijack proceedings? For now at least, we can’t know. All we can say for sure is what the court has heard over the days leading to today’s sentence of life in prison with no minimum parole: Using overwhelming firepower against defenceless civilians he took the lives of 51 men, women and children, injured many more and left even more bereft. ANOTHER ON THE LIST His silence notwithstanding, then, he is not an … [Read more...] about Commentary: Why the New Zealand mosque gunman deserved an unprecedented sentence

Real Sociedad ready to look Man United in the eye, says coach

· February 17, 2021 ·

TURIN: Real Sociedad will play with the handbrake off against Manchester United in Thursday's Europa League last-32 first leg, coach Imanol Alguacil said ahead of his side's 'home' game which is being played in Italy due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Basque side are renowned for their attacking flair and led the La Liga standings until mid-December before sliding down to fifth. They sneaked into the knockout phase of the Europa League ahead of AZ Alkmaar thanks to a stoppage time equaliser against Napoli and the coach said his side would not stray from their buccaneering approach against the 20-times English champions. "We are of course excited about playing Manchester United but Real Sociedad offer our own excitement, because of how we play the important games," he told a news conference. "We overcame the group of death by playing great teams and even though United are a step up, we can look them in the eye. But we'll be aware of their power, the fact they're a historic … [Read more...] about Real Sociedad ready to look Man United in the eye, says coach

Football: AWS real-time stats give Bundesliga players fewer excuses

· February 20, 2021 ·

REUTERS: When Erling Haaland scored his 25th Bundesliga goal for Borussia Dortmund in his 25th game for the club the 20-year-old striker had certainly exceeded expectations but for the first time analysts were able to calculate by exactly how much. Haaland had taken 73 shots on goal for an Expected Goals (xGoals) tally of 18.15, which means he had scored seven more goals than expected, underlining his world class efficiency in converting shots from difficult situations. The metric measures the quality of chances and considers factors such as distance to goal, angle of the shot, number of opponents in a player's path and goalkeeper's position before comparing it with thousands of similar instances in the past. xGoals has only recently entered football parlance but is slowly gaining a foothold in statistics to explain in greater detail how players and teams perform. The Bundesliga signed a deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deliver advanced statistics and has been … [Read more...] about Football: AWS real-time stats give Bundesliga players fewer excuses

One of the photos shows a reproduction of the eponymous structure from Howl’s Moving Castle while the other appears to be a replica of the village area as seen in Princess Mononoke. It’s been reported that the castle will be as high as a four-to-five-storey building. The theme park – located at the Aichi Expo Memorial Park in Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture, in Japan – is slated to open towards the end of 2022. According to Kotaku, the park will have five areas based on the studio’s films: Witch Valley, Princess Mononoke Village, Ghibli’s Giant Warehouse, Dondoko Forest and Springtime of Life Hill.
