Sugar in short supply across utlity stores in Pakistan

· February 27, 2021 ·

Pakistan may be heading towards another sugar crisis, as utility stores across the country have run out of the commodity, reported Geo News on Saturday. Sources informed Geo News that the situation has created problems for customers, who are forced to buy it from the open market for Rs30-35 more compared to what it was being sold for in utility stores. The Utility Stores Corporation, according to sources, do not have enough sugar stock available in the country and in order to remedy the situation, six tenders to purchase the commodity were issued. However, only 20,000 metric tonnes of sugar were bought on the last tender, said sources. They further confirmed that it may take one to two weeks for local sugar to be available in stores. The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP), on the other hand, will issue sugar tenders on March 2 and even after a deal is signed to import the commodity, it may take up to two weeks for sugar to land in Pakistan. Cricket: Pakistan coach Younis granted leave to see family after six months

· December 23, 2020 ·

LONDON: Pakistan's bowling coach Waqar Younis is set for a family reunion following a six-month hiatus after the country's cricket board (PCB) granted him leave on Tuesday to fly to see them in Lahore after the first test against New Zealand. Younis, whose family is usually based in Sydney, has been travelling with Pakistan since they toured England in June. The 49-year-old attempted a reunion in Sydney in September but his father passed away while Younis was in quarantine so he had to fly back to Pakistan for the funeral. Younis asked the team management for leave to spend time with his family who are in Lahore until Jan. 17. "Considering Waqar has not seen his family since June and taking into account that our home series against South Africa, which follows the series against New Zealand, doesn't finish until Feb 14, we took a pragmatic view of his request," Pakistan manager Mansoor Rana said. "(We) have allowed him to return home early so that he can spend additional … [Read more...] about Cricket: Pakistan coach Younis granted leave to see family after six months

Cricket: Pakistan captain Babar to miss first New Zealand test due to injury

· December 21, 2020 ·

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan captain Babar Azam has been ruled out of the first test against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui starting Dec 26 due to a fractured thumb, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Monday (Dec 21). Babar, 26, sustained the injury during a practice session in Queenstown last week and was ruled out of the ongoing three-match Twenty20 series. Opening batsman Imam-Ul-Haq will also miss the game after fracturing his left thumb during a net session. Both players are yet to return to the nets with the team’s medical staff closely monitoring their progress, the PCB said. Mohammad Rizwan will become Pakistan's 33rd test captain when he leads the side in Babar's absence. "Although it will be nearly two weeks since Babar's injury when the first test starts, it will be hard on him and the team to play him without any net sessions," Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq said. "I remain confident and optimistic that other players will rise to the occasion in Mount … [Read more...] about Cricket: Pakistan captain Babar to miss first New Zealand test due to injury

Pakistan warns India against ‘false flag’ attacks in Kashmir

· December 21, 2020 ·

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's military was on high alert in Kashmir on Monday (Dec 21) as its prime minister warned India against carrying out any “false flag” operations in the disputed region after a UN vehicle in the Pakistan-held part came under attack. Pakistan blamed last Friday's attack on India, implying it was aimed at embarrassing Islamabad and harming relations with the international community. The two UN observers in the vehicle escaped unharmed. “I am making absolutely clear to the (international) community that if India was to be reckless enough to conduct a false flag operation against Pakistan, it would confront a strong national Pakistani resolve & be given a befitting response at all levels of the threat. Make no mistake,” Prime Minister Imran Khan tweeted on Sunday. Pakistan says the attack on the UN vehicle was deliberate, as such vehicles are clearly marked and “recognisable even from long distances”. The UN confirmed the attack and said it was being … [Read more...] about Pakistan warns India against ‘false flag’ attacks in Kashmir

Commentary: Kashmir conflict is not just a border dispute between India and Pakistan

· March 10, 2019 ·

VIRGINIA: Tensions between India and Pakistan have diminished in recent days after repeated military clashes in Kashmir led to fear that the two nuclear powers could be on the verge of war. Kashmir is a disputed territory divided between India and Pakistan but claimed in its entirety by both sides. The latest Kashmir standoff was triggered by a Feb 14 suicide bombing by Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM), a militant group with links to al Qaeda and founded by the Pakistan-based cleric Masood Azhar. More than 40 Indian soldiers died. India blamed Pakistan for providing moral and material support to the terrorist organisation, which is banned in Pakistan but operates openly there. On Feb 26, India launched air strikes against JeM’s training camps on the Pakistani side of Kashmir.
