Thai leader threatens punishment for false COVID-19 vaccine news

· January 19, 2021 ·

BANGKOK: Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha warned on Tuesday (Jan 19) that his government will prosecute anyone who shares false information about coronavirus vaccines on social or mass media. The government already has the power to impose punishments under a state of emergency that was declared last March to deal with the health threat. Prayuth’s warning was an apparent reaction to charges that his government has done too little to acquire adequate supplies of vaccines. The criticism took on a sharp political tinge after a popular politician aired such allegations in an internet broadcast on Monday night. Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, former leader of the dissolved Future Forward Party, accused the government of acting too slowly to inoculate the country’s population. Thanathorn has long been a thorn in the side of Prayuth’s government. 13 suspects in court over India gang-rape ‘punishment’, village elder claims innocence

· January 24, 2014 ·

SUBALPUR, India (AFP) - Thirteen men arrested over the alleged gang-rape of a woman in India for "dishonouring" her community appeared in court on Friday as a village elder accused of ordering the punishment insisted he was innocent. As India's chief justice ordered an inquiry into the incident which has further fuelled public anger over levels of sexual violence, the victim's neighbours described her as a charming woman who planned to marry. Police and prosecutors said the 13 accused were produced before a court in West Bengal's Birbhum district over allegations that the 20-year-old woman was repeatedly assaulted for being in a relationship with a Muslim man. "All 13 accused arrested on the charge of gang-rape were remanded to 13-day police custody to help police investigate the incident," assistant public prosecutor Phiroz Kumar Pal told AFP. The defendants included the head of the tribal council in the village of Supalpur, 58-year-old Balai Mardi, who is alleged to have … [Read more...] about 13 suspects in court over India gang-rape ‘punishment’, village elder claims innocence

Thai scientists race to develop homemade COVID-19 vaccine amid second wave of infections

· January 21, 2021 ·

BANGKOK: As the Thai government races to secure more COVID-19 vaccines from various sources, a group of medical scientists is preparing for the first clinical trial of a home-grown cure they are developing to fight the pandemic. In April, they expect to inject 72 volunteers aged between 18 and 75 with ChulaCov19 – a vaccine that is being developed by the Medicine Faculty of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok to fight the infectious disease. “We’ll inject our first volunteer in April, probably around the end of the month. Within two months, we should know the results of Phase 1, which will show what appropriate dosages will be,” said Kiat Ruxrungtham, professor of medicine and director of Chulalongkorn University’s vaccine research centre – Chula VRC. Globally, there are several types of vaccine technologies being used for COVID-19. ChulaCov19 employs Messenger RNA or mRNA, which enables the body to produce a protein that triggers an immune response to the virus.
