That corporate statements on social justice often stand at odds with their track records barely needs stating (check out their federal income taxes). But the moral gymnastics some perform can be astounding, as Judd Legum illustrated in his newsletter, Popular Information, on Tuesday. CitiGroup, for example, which tweeted a statement in support of Black Lives Matter, donated $242,000 to members of Congress with an “F” rating from the NAACP in the 2020 election cycle alone. Google, which also issued statements on the protests, has donated $351,000 to “F”-rated politicians this year. Is it worse that companies like Hobby Lobby, Walmart, and Volkswagen said nothing? One of the most remarkable aspects of the Washington NFL Team deciding to change its nickname from an ethnic slur to a non-ethnic slur is how quickly the organization seemed to flip on the matter. (Especially considering owner Daniel Snyder’s famous claim that it would NEVER – using all caps here, as he demanded — happen.) The NFL’s season begins — or is at least very hopefully planning to begin — on September 10, but the team’s announcement makes it clear the name will change before then. That means Washington has to come up with a new name, a new logo, a new marketing scheme and an entire new identity in less time than it takes to play half a season.
