Coronavirus: Australia wants EU to ‘review’ Italy’s vaccine block

· January 5, 2021 ·

Australia's prime minister on Friday said he "understands" why Italy blocked the planned export of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine . Nevertheless, Australia asked the European Commission on Friday to review the decision. Italy, backed by the European Union's executive arm, used export controls to stop around 250,000 doses leaving for Australia earlier this week, after the drug manufacturer failed to fulfill its European Union order. "Australia has raised the issue with the European Commission through multiple channels," Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt told reporters on Friday. Ethiopia Releases BBC Journalist, Others Detained in Tigray

· March 3, 2021 ·

U.S. lawmakers and rights groups welcomed the release Wednesday of four journalists and media workers in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, and highlighted the important role the press plays in covering unrest. The BBC confirmed the release of Girmay Gebru, a reporter for its language service, who was detained Monday, and said it was “seeking a full explanation.” Translators with the French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Britain's Financial Times and a journalist working with The New York Times were also released, Abebe Gebrehiwot Yihdego, deputy head of Tigray's interim administration, told Reuters . U.S. Representative Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, described their release as “a positive development,” but told VOA the arrests “never should have happened in the first place.” “There must be full access to journalists and independent investigators to look into these disturbing reports,” said McCaul, of Texas. Sherlock Holmes’ famous memory trick really works

· March 5, 2021 ·

Sherlock Holmes remembers everything by imagining that he's storing bits of information in a "memory palace," a technique that originated in ancient Greece. Now, researchers have found that this method really does work to create long-lasting memories. Users of the mnemonic technique, called the "method of loci," mentally navigate around a familiar place, such as a path (or Holmes' palace). To remember a piece of information, you "drop" it along the path and later retrace your steps and "pick it up." For example, if you're very familiar with Central Park in New York City, you can imagine walking through it, dropping the word "book" at the Boat House, then the word "water bottle" at the next bend, then the word "space" at the fountain. When you want to remember the words, you imagine retracing your exact steps. By training with this method, the world's best memory champions can remember inordinate amounts of information, like word lists, digit series and decks of cards, … [Read more...] about Sherlock Holmes’ famous memory trick really works

Amrita Rao on pregnancy: RJ Anmol reads from the Bhagvad Gita to baby and me every night

· October 14, 2020 ·

On Tuesday, a picture of Amrita Rao and her husband, RJ Anmol, standing outside a doctor’s office, her baby bump very evident, broke on the social media. When Mirror reached out to the actress , she confirmed the happy news, saying “It’s like reliving our childhood.” However, she admitted that the feeling that she will be a mother soon is yet to sink in. “I guess it takes your child to be in front of you to believe what nature can do,” she muses. Amrita goes on to share that it was Anmol who got to see the report first and broke the news of the pregnancy to her. The couple had tied the knot on May 15, 2016, after dating for seven years. Ask the 34-year-old actress what made them decide that 2020 was the year to take their family forward and she quips, “One can’t plan these things, they just happen.” Untitled Carousel Salman Khan wraps up Radhe ahead of schedule; release date to be announced within a fortnight On October 2, Salman Khan got back to the set after … [Read more...] about Amrita Rao on pregnancy: RJ Anmol reads from the Bhagvad Gita to baby and me every night

As Microsoft email software hack spreads, experts brace for more impact

· March 6, 2021 ·

WASHINGTON: The hackers behind the powerful set of digital intrusion tools exposed by Microsoft Corp this week are on a tear, breaking into organizations across the United States and Europe. With the weekend looming, experts say it is only a matter of time before the break-in tools are cloned by other spies or cybercriminals, with the potential to compound the problem for users of Microsoft's widely used Exchange email and calendaring software. Wielding tools that exploited four previously unknown vulnerabilities, the allegedly Chinese group that Microsoft dubs "Hafnium" has been breaking into email servers since January, remotely and silently draining inboxes of their messages without having to send a single malicious email or rogue attachment. Norwegian authorities said they had seen "limited" use of the hacking tools in their country. The Prague municipality and the Czech Ministry for Labor and Social Affairs were among those affected, according to a European cyber … [Read more...] about As Microsoft email software hack spreads, experts brace for more impact
