In a recent speech, delivered virtually before the Munich Security Conference, President Biden adamantly declared , “We have to push back against the Chinese government’s abuses and coercion that undercut the foundations of the international economic system.” “Everyone must play by the same rules,” he added. Earlier in February, the White House issued a similarly strong statement following the first phone call between Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to the White House , Biden raised “fundamental concerns” about various problems in China, including “coercive and unfair economic practices, crackdown in Hong Kong, human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and increasingly assertive actions in the region, including toward Taiwan.” ADVERTISEMENT Although Biden’s statements are undoubtedly important and should be welcomed by Americans of every political persuasion, it is hard to imagine Beijing is shaking in its boots over Biden’s tough talk. For starters, Biden … [Read more...] about Despite tough talk, Biden would make Beijing more powerful than ever

How to rethink Russia sanctions
Since 2012, Russia has become subject of ever more Western sanctions. Some have been unilateral U.S. sanctions, while Western allies have joined in others. Currently, the United States has about 15 different sanctions programs for Russia, and several others have been proposed. Sensibly, the Biden administration has called for a review of U.S. Russia sanctions. Sanctions should be effective. They should deter, punish and hopefully reverse bad behavior. Narrowly targeted and clearly defined sanctions are usually more effective than broad sanctions that, for example, aim at regime change. The more countries that participate, the more effective sanctions tend to be. Therefore, the Biden administration is right in its intent to return to far-reaching coordination with European allies in its Russia sanctions. The first American sanctions on Russia after the Cold War was the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012. It targets violators of human rights and corruption in … [Read more...] about How to rethink Russia sanctions
Romney-Cotton, a Cancun cabbie and the minimum wage debate
Several years ago, while attending a gathering of economists in Cancun, Mexico, I decided to hire a cab for a tour of the area during an afternoon break. After jumping in, I asked the driver to take me to the center of town, away from the resort-stuffed beach area and, along the way, to tell me about the local economy, where people live and shop, and what they do for a living. I learned quite a bit more than that, including something applicable to the minimum wage debate taking place in Washington. During the 30-minute ride, I learned about his family’s hopes and dreams. “If your dreams come true, what will you be doing next year?” I asked. ADVERTISEMENT “My dream? To make it to America and get a job earning your minimum wage to send money home,” I remember him replying. This job would make him the highest paid member of his family. “Our future would be much brighter,” he continued. “I’ve seen other people do it.” I thought about this conversation while reading about the … [Read more...] about Romney-Cotton, a Cancun cabbie and the minimum wage debate
Joe Biden Voices Concern About Future of Critical Supply Chains in America
President Joe Biden ordered a review of critical supply chains Wednesday, acknowledging concerns about America’s ability to acquire critical items for manufacturing. The president spoke after meeting with a bipartisan group of members of Congress to discuss the issue. “This is a critical area where Republicans and Democrats agreed, it was one of the best meetings I think we’ve had so far,” he said, noting that he had been president for about five weeks. “It was like the old days, people were actually on the same page.” Biden focused on recent glaring examples of shortages of personal protective equipment during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and recent shortages of semiconductor chips, slowing auto manufacturing. The president did not specifically mention America’s over-reliance on countries like China for critical supplies but hinted about the dangers that the country faced. “We shouldn’t have to rely on a foreign country, especially one that doesn’t share our … [Read more...] about Joe Biden Voices Concern About Future of Critical Supply Chains in America
