NEW DELHI: A trail of death and destruction descended on Panchkula, otherwise a peaceful city of Haryana, as soon as the self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted by a special CBI court here in a rape case. The violence and arson by the supporters of the Dera Sacha Sauda chief brought back the chilling memories of last year when this city, on the outskirts of Chandigarh, witnessed agitation by the Jats over reservation. Punjab and Haryana High court has ordered seizure of Ram Rahim's properties to compensate the loss incurred by the violence triggered by his followers post court's verdict. Followers of Ram Rahim, who had gathered here in thousands over the past four days, went on a rampage, hurling stones, vandalising media vehicles and setting afire several vehicles, many among them two wheelers. Recently, I was asked by Richard Doupe, the academic director of Berkhamsted School, if he could use my Think article “Do Souls Exist” for their philosophy of religion classes—and, more importantly, if I would field questions from the students after they had read it. The Berkhamsted School is a school on the outskirts of London—what we in America would call a private middle/high school. Established in the 16th century, it (and its 2000 students) has an outstanding reputation for academic excellence and most of their students end up going to the top 30 universities in the UK. It was no surprise, then, that they asked some excellent questions.
