China increases defense budget in 2021 by 6.8%

· March 8, 2021 ·

CHINA increased its 2021 defense budget by 6.8 percent to 1.35 trillion yuan ($209 billion) in a quicker pace than last year’s growth, which analysts believe is normal, steady and restrained as the country resiliently emerges from the wreckage of Covid-19 pandemic. The budget increase, released in a draft budget report issued at the opening of the annual session of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s top legislature, on Friday, is slightly higher than the 6.6 percent hike in 2020 when the country and the rest of the world were still struggling to fight the unprecedent Covid-19 pandemic that upended the globe. China’s defense budget for 2020 was 1.27 trillion yuan ($179 billion), up 6.6 percent from 2019. China has maintained a single-digit growth in its annual defense budget since 2016. The increased defense budget growth rate in 2021 is normal, steady and restrained, considering China’s own rightful need to develop its national defense capacity, the recovering … [Read more...] about China increases defense budget in 2021 by 6.8%

Bringing saris back: The Indian social media influencers celebrating ‘6 yards of freedom’

· March 8, 2021 ·

Saris are stereotyped as staid and restrictive, but these women are wearing them for everything from hula-hooping to skydiving. This story is part of a series on women’s issues in China and Asia to coincide with International Women’s Day. Eshna Kutty carries her clothes as effortlessly as she does her dance routines. She pirouettes to the popular Bollywood song Genda Phool as she spins a hula hoop around her body, twirling it in the air, jumping through it and generally defying the laws of physics as she contorts her limbs through it. Eye-catching though the routine in the video clip is, it is not Kutty’s dance moves that have captured India’s attention, but what she is wearing. For, rather than her blue sports bra, sneakers and tights she is wearing a maroon sari. The Instagram post of the professional dancer, 24, accompanied by the hashtag #sareeflow was posted in Sept and has since been copied by hundreds of other women hooping just like her, all dressed in saris. Kutty … [Read more...] about Bringing saris back: The Indian social media influencers celebrating ‘6 yards of freedom’

Awkwafina on playing a blue Disney character & being compared to Robin Williams

· March 8, 2021 ·

Think dragons and images of warriors, magic and fantasy come to mind. Fire breathing beasts with a strong presence, holding court and the attention of everyone. The last thing you would ever think of though, is an Asian American actress playing the role of an awe-inspiring mythical beast. Well, neither could comedian and actress Awkwafina, when she got the call from Disney, to voice Sisu, the awkward but heroic blue dragon in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon. “When I first got the call to voice Sisu, I was so mind blown. I almost didn’t believe it. I didn’t believe that this was a real call. Maybe they want to now but like, who knows if they still want me later?” said Awkwafina in an exclusive interview with Geek Culture. You know, I’ve always connected with dragons – I was born in the year of the Dragon so I just think if I was ever gonna play an animal, it’s a cool animal to play. Well, as disconnected it might have sounded to the 32-year-old actress then, the combination … [Read more...] about Awkwafina on playing a blue Disney character & being compared to Robin Williams

Joe Manchin Offers a Glimmer of Hope for Filibuster Reform

· March 8, 2021 ·

WASHINGTON — Six weeks into Joe Biden ’s presidency, there are new signs filibuster reform might happen. After a marathon overnight voting session last week, the Senate voted along party lines to pass the $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill supported by Biden. The American Recovery Plan Act of 2021 now heads to the House for a final vote. From there, it will likely land on Biden’s desk in the next week. When he signs it, the first major legislative accomplishment of the Biden presidency will be done. So will the easy part of Biden’s policy agenda. The biggest reason for why everything is about to get much harder? The filibuster, a procedural tool that gives a minority of senators the ability to block bills that don’t affect the federal budget or tax code. In other words, without reforming or abolishing the filibuster, any new legislation to expand voting rights, address gerrymandering, fight climate change, and overhaul the country’s immigration system faces a brick wall … [Read more...] about Joe Manchin Offers a Glimmer of Hope for Filibuster Reform
