Cricket: Waqar wants Pakistan policy to stop abrupt format-dropping

· April 6, 2020 ·

LAHORE: Bowling coach Waqar Younis wants Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to formulate a policy to stop players from abruptly dropping the test format, the former captain said on Monday. Experienced quicks Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz quit test cricket last year to focus on the short formats and Pakistan's bowling frailties were subsequently exposed in Australia where they lost both the test and Twenty20 series. "Of course you can't stop anyone or force anyone. But there should be a policy by the board," Waqar said in a video conference with reporters. "If a star player suddenly leaves, or drops a format, it's a massive setback for the team. You're forced to fast-track rookies, which is a big problem and we faced it in absence of Amir and Wahab. "I'm not saying we'd have won in Australia with them, but we could have done better, benefiting from their experience." Waqar felt Pakistan needed a bigger pool of fast bowlers to cope with the demand of limited-overs cricket and was … [Read more...] about Cricket: Waqar wants Pakistan policy to stop abrupt format-dropping

Ministries refute ‘several untrue claims’ by Progress Singapore Party about POFMA

· December 12, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: A recent statement by the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has made "several untrue claims" about the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA), the Ministry of Law (MinLaw) and Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) said on Wednesday (Dec 11). Last month, POFMA was utilised for the first time , directing PSP member Brad Bowyer to correct a Facebook post he made that, among other things, questioned the independence of Temasek and GIC. Under POFMA, a minister has the power to declare that an article contains falsehoods and issue directions, including asking for a correction to be carried. This direction can be challenged in court. On Tuesday, PSP said in a statement that the Act "falls short" of the values of transparency, independence and accountability. It claimed POFMA could be used by ministers to declare a piece of news to be "falsehood, without requiring any justification, criteria or standards". Here is how Canada can improve its policy to help Hong Kongers

· March 1, 2021 ·

In November 2019, I came to Ottawa after the tragic sieges of universities in Hong Kong and unprecedented landslide victory in the District Council Election. I did not expect that a year and a half later I would be addressing the Canadian Parliament encouraging it to help the most vulnerable protesters to escape and find refuge. Since the National Security Law’s introduction, more than 100 Hong Kong residents have been arrested. Most recently, 47 prominent political figures from all political spectrums were charged with “subversion of the state” simply because they participated in the democratic primaries aimed at securing more seats in the legislature. All the arrestees face between 10 years and life in prison and the possibility of extradition to China . As Beijing tightens its grip, more protesters face the stark choice of staying and facing likely arrest or attempting to escape. As a student activist I, too, faced this painful choice, and as a result of my dual-nationality, … [Read more...] about Here is how Canada can improve its policy to help Hong Kongers

As opposition parties eye a new single member seat, a three-cornered fight looms in Marymount

· April 5, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: Nestled in the north of Bishan, 23,439 registered voters sit in the new Marymount Single Member Constituency (SMC). Bounded by Marymount Road, Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 and the southern fence of Catholic High School and Whitley Secondary School, the seat has been carved out of Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC),and will likely set the scene for more than one opposition party to contest against the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) in Singapore's looming General Election. As it stands, the new SMC consists mostly of areas under the Bishan North ward overseen by Manpower Minister and three-term PAP MP Josephine Teo, with its residents living across seven polling districts live in HDB flats spread out across from the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park at one end to the Shunfu neighbourhood and Sin Ming industrial estate, with pockets of landed homes and private condominiums in between. Amenities include the Bishan North Shopping Mall, Shunfu Market, as well as … [Read more...] about As opposition parties eye a new single member seat, a three-cornered fight looms in Marymount
