Rishi Sunak today presented yet another £65billion of Covid support in his annual Budget. The Chancellor extended most schemes until September and gave businesses another shot in the arm as they wait for a vaccine. But all that help comes at a cost, and we're not just talking about a hike in Corporation Tax. A stealth tax hike on working Brits will raise £8bn a year and schemes could run out in September while 2million are still furloughed. The Budget speech is always a triumphant affair, burying the awkward details to a few lines or none at all. To get a real feel for what's going on, you must read the hundreds of pages of documents slipped out when the Chancellor sits down. We're still trawling through the mammoth pile of Budget documents, including analysis from the Office for Budget Responsibility watchdog (OBR). But here are the biggest surprises in the small print that have leaped out at us so far. 1. NHS spending overall looks set to be cut Rishi Sunak said … [Read more...] about Budget 2021: 11 surprises hidden in the small print from ‘NHS cut’ to Brexit

NHS worker arrested on suspicion of murder, rape and sexual assault following Blackpool stroke ward investigation
A healthcare professional has been arrested on suspicion of murder, rape and sexual assault following a police investigation at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. A spokesman for Lancashire Police said the man was in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder, two offences of rape and one offence of sexual assault. The arrest was made as part of a murder investigation into the death of Valerie Kneale, 75, from Blackpool, who died from a haemorrhage caused by a non-medical-related internal injury. A post-mortem on Ms Kneale was one of a number conducted as part of an investigation which began in November 2018 into allegations of mistreatment and neglect on the hospital's stroke unit. Windrush campaigner dispels Covid vaccine myths in plea to black and Asian communities
A Windrush campaigner has pleaded with people from black and Asian communities to get the Covid vaccine after being sent questions from sceptics when he got the jab himself. Patrick Vernon filmed himself after being vaccinated as part of his crusade for more black and Asian people to get the jab with shocking figures showing the uptake is low among some communities. The clip had a broadly positive impact, but some asked Patrick if he was all right while others even jokingly wondered if he had "grown a tail". Data released last month shows 14.4% of white people in England have been vaccinated, compared with 9.2% of Asian people, 6.8% of black people and 4.7% from mixed ethnic groups. Patrick, a former NHS director, shared a video of himself after being jabbed and has had a positive reaction from people saying they have since been vaccinated. But the 59-year-old, who is currently an NHS non-executive, said more needs to be done by the Government to encourage ethnic minority … [Read more...] about Windrush campaigner dispels Covid vaccine myths in plea to black and Asian communities

Tory Rishi Sunak today announced changes to tax, furlough and Stamp Duty in his 2021 Budget . The Chancellor said he must take "unpopular" and "honest" decisions as he reversed some Tory Corporation Tax cuts and cancelled an Income Tax break for millions of Brits. He warned next year borrowing will hit £234bn or 10.3% of GDP - “an amount so large it has only one rival in recent history, this year”. And Covid spending including fiscal support has hit £407bn. But in reality the Chancellor put off many of the most painful decisions until later and gave businesses a huge tax break for now - one he claimed was the biggest in history. He also extended several breaks and Covid support schemes beyond the end of the roadmap. Mr Sunak said more than 700,000 people have lost their jobs since March and the economy has fallen by more than 10% - the fastest fall in more than 300 years. “It’s going to take this country and the whole world a long time to recover from this extraordinary … [Read more...] about Budget 2021 summary: Key announcements at a glance as Covid spending hits £407bn
