By Hari Chathrattil* “Việt Nam News is my first family here.” This is something I have repeated innumerable times ever since I first walked into the newspaper’s office 26 years ago and met Nguyễn Khuyến, the paper’s first Editor-in-chief, an encounter as fresh in my mind today as it was then. Yesterday, an inseparable part of those halcyon days left our family forever. Robert Bicknell became a part of the Việt Nam News family as a proofreader back then, and Khuyến being Khuyến, spotted his talent and made him a columnist whose disarming, humour-laced writing unfailingly entertained all of us, not to mention legions of readers, week after week, for almost three decades. I am not a fan of golf being played in tropical countries, and Robert and I went head to head on this account, not to mention several other political issues where we never saw eye to eye on. A friend who waded into one of our heated … [Read more...] about Farewell to golf columnist Robert Bicknell, forever part of the Việt Nam News family
The new Ghostbusters trailer has not fared as well on the official Sony Youtube Channel as the studio had hoped. The teaser has gotten 192,590 up votes compared to 454,844 down votes, with the majority of fans hating this new iteration of the classic franchise. Though, the all-female cast sounds like the least of its problems. A Reddit user claims to have seen the movie, and their review makes it sound pretty dire. Will it be a bomb? Perhaps. But we're holding out hope that it's at least funny. That may not be the case, if we're to believe this advanced critique. And there are some spoilers included here that are sure to make most fans groan loudly. First and foremost, it sounds like Slimer is getting a girlfriend. This gluttonous green blob will look just like the franchise's most iconic ghost, though it has long brown hair. And apparently, the end of the movie uses another classic character to set up a sequel. While Zuul is nowhere to be seen in this first movie, the demigod and … [Read more...] about Latest Ghostbusters Spoilers Are Sure to Enrage Fans

Southern Rail passengers will be forced to endure mid-summer travel misery as workers stage a 24-hour strike. The walkout, by members of the RMT union, is the latest in a long-running and bitter dispute with Southern over its plans to extend driver-only trains and to remove guards from services. It coincides with an ongoing overtime ban in place for workers who belong to the train drivers’ union Aslef, which has been in place since last month. When is the strike? Workers will stage the walkout on Monday 10 July from 00:01 to 23:59. Who is striking? Guards and drivers on Southern Rail who are members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) workers’ union will take part in the rail strike. Their walkout is independent of a separate overtime ban currently in place by members of the train drivers’ union Aslef, which it says accounts for more than 95 per cent of Southern Rail drivers. A spokesperson for Southern confirmed that any non-RMT staff due to work … [Read more...] about How will the latest Southern Rail strike affect passengers?
Cell phones are really hurting people badly as researchers have found that head and neck injuries incurred while driving or walking with a cellphone are on the rise - and correlates with the launch of the iPhone in 2007 and release of Pokemon Go in 2016. "Injuries from cellphone use have mainly been reported from incidences during driving, but other types of injuries have gone largely underreported," said study author Boris Paskhover from Rutgers University in the US. "We hypothesise that distractions caused by cellphones were the biggest reason for injury and mainly affected people aged 13 to 29," Paskhover said. The study, published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, reviewed 2,501 emergency department patients who sustained head and neck injuries resulting from cellphone use between 1998 and 2017. They found a steady increase in injuries over that time, along with the notable spikes. Pokémon Go is an augmented reality-based game that requires players to track … [Read more...] about Rise in phone-related injuries linked to iphone, Pokemon Go: Study
